Small but very rich, Pienza is easily visited on foot, but every corner tells something. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a masterpiece of Renaissance town planning commissioned by Pope Pius II.
It is often entered through Porta del Murello, walking along Corso Rossellino, the main axis overlooked by palaces and wonderful views.
The heart of the city is the central square, where you find the Duomo, an elegant and luminous cathedral inspired by German Gothic, and three palaces symbolic of Renaissance power: Palazzo Piccolomini, with its splendid garden overlooking the Val d'Orcia, Palazzo Borgia, now home to the Diocesan Museum, and the Palazzo Comunale, with its characteristic tower.
