Copenhagen on a Budget: What Three Days Really Costs
Last updated: October 2026
Intro
Three days in Copenhagen costs about 2,000 kr (roughly €270) for one person in a hostel dorm, about 6,650 kr (€890) for a solo traveller in an average hotel room, and about 4,760 kr each (€640) when two share that room. Prices are in Danish kroner (kr), checked in October 2026, with euros at about 7.5 kr to the euro. The fresh news: a 20 kr a night tourist tax is being considered but is not law, and the National Museum is not free.
The cheapest way to see the centre is on foot, and the Ciceru Copenhagen walk is €7 in the Ciceru app, with a story and a quiz question at each stop and a free 500 MB global eSIM.
⚡ Quick answer
- Lean: about 670 kr a day (€90): hostel bed, two casual meals, a coffee, a beer, one cheap sight, a 72-hour transport pass
- Normal: Visit Copenhagen's own mid-range figure is about 1,800 kr a day (€240). Built item by item, a solo traveller in an average hotel lands nearer 2,200 kr
- Comfortable: about 4,500 kr a day (€600), the top tier Visit Copenhagen publishes
- Tourist tax: none charged as far as September 2026 reporting shows. The government is considering 20 kr per overnight stay
- Tipping: not expected. Service and 25% VAT are already in the price
💶 What a day costs, three ways
Visit Copenhagen's "Is Copenhagen expensive?" page, last updated September 2026, gives the yardsticks: a cappuccino 45 to 55 kr, a draught beer 55 to 65 kr, a casual meal about 150 kr, a three-course dinner at a mid-range restaurant 350 to 450 kr, and most museums 100 to 200 kr. Its daily budgets are around 700 kr (budget), 1,800 kr (mid-range) and 4,500 kr (luxury).
Lean, about 670 kr: a 145 kr bed, two 150 kr meals, a coffee and a beer (about 100 kr), plus a share of sights and transport. That lands almost on Visit Copenhagen's budget figure.
Normal, about 2,200 kr solo: an average 1,255 kr hotel room, a 150 kr lunch, a 400 kr dinner, two coffees and a beer, one paid sight and a transport pass. Share the room and the day is about 1,600 kr each.
Comfortable, about 4,500 kr: Visit Copenhagen's luxury figure. Rooms and restaurant dinners drive it.
🛏️ Where to sleep
Visit Copenhagen puts hostel beds from 145 kr a night and an average hotel at 1,255 kr. That gap is the biggest lever in the budget.
Hostel prices swing. Generator Copenhagen's own page (Adelgade 5 to 7, near Kongens Nytorv) listed dorm beds from €12.80 in an eight-bed room and €20 in a four-bed, with private twins from €55.20. Those are "from" prices for the cheapest dates, so expect more in busy weeks. Neighbourhood price bands could not be checked against an official source, so none are quoted.
🥪 Food: local price and tourist price
Hold 150 kr in your head for a casual meal. Visit Copenhagen says good food at around that price or less exists, and that tasting menus under 500 kr do too. A sit-down dinner is 350 to 450 kr. If a menu asks far above 150 kr for a simple lunch, you are paying for the view.
Savers that Visit Copenhagen lists:
- 🥐 Bakeries and food markets instead of restaurants for some meals
- 🍽️ Lunch menus, which can cost less than dinner
- 🌭 Comparing street food stalls, as they are not always the cheapest
Dishes and areas are in What to Eat in Copenhagen.
🚇 Transport, cards and cash
Single journeys start at 24 kr, and the City Pass Small is 100 kr for 24 hours, 160 kr for 48 and 220 kr for 72, per Visit Copenhagen. The centre is walkable, so many visitors need little. An airport taxi is roughly 250 to 400 kr. Fares and airport options are in Getting Around Copenhagen.
Visit Copenhagen says major cards work in hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants, Visa being the most common, and some places charge a foreign-card fee. Pay by card and keep a little cash as back-up.

🎟️ Attractions: what costs what
Checked on each attraction's own page in October 2026:
- 🏰 Rosenborg Castle: 140 kr online, 150 kr at the door, students 100 kr. Open 10:00 to 17:00 daily, then Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 16:00 from 2 November to 23 December
- 🏛️ Christiansborg Palace: combined ticket 225 kr at the door, 215 kr online. Reception rooms alone 150 kr (140 online), and ruins, kitchen or stables 85 kr (75 online). Open 10:00 to 17:00 until 1 November. The Royal Reception Rooms are closed 14 to 21 October 2026, and every visitor attraction closes on Monday 19 October
- 🗼 Round Tower: 60 kr, students 40 kr. Winter hours (October to March) are 10:00 to 18:00 Wednesday to Sunday and 10:00 to 21:00 Monday and Tuesday
- 🏺 National Museum of Denmark: 130 kr for adults. Open daily 10:00 to 17:00 until October, then closed Mondays from November
- 🎡 Tivoli Gardens: Tivoli's own Halloween example is 200 kr to enter and 269 kr for an adult ride pass, about 470 kr together, and prices vary by date. Halloween season runs 2 October to 1 November 2026. You may bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks in non-glass containers
- 🖼️ Glyptotek: free on the last Wednesday of each month and always free under 18. The standard adult price was not published on the pages checked, so see its booking page
Under-18s are free at Rosenborg, Christiansborg, the Round Tower and the National Museum, though Rosenborg and Christiansborg still want a ticket issued. What costs nothing is in Free Things to Do in Copenhagen.
Is the Copenhagen Card worth it? The DISCOVER card is 589 kr for 24 hours, 859 kr for 48, 1,039 kr for 72 and 1,419 kr for 120. Its own pages say it covers 80 or more attractions and public transport across the Capital Region, airport included. Its attraction list includes Tivoli (the card covers the entrance, one visit per card), Rosenborg, Christiansborg's palace rooms, the National Museum and the Glyptotek, but the Round Tower did not appear on it, so check before you count it. Sum 72 hours: Rosenborg 140, the Christiansborg combined ticket 215, the National Museum 130 and a Tivoli gate of roughly 200 make about 685 kr. Add a 72-hour City Pass at 220 and it is about 905 kr, against 1,039 kr for the card. The card only wins if you cram in several more paid sights, and it never wins on transport alone.

🏷️ The tourist tax and how things are charged
As far as reporting shows, Denmark has no tourist tax at present. On 15 September 2026 The Local reported that the government is considering 20 kr per overnight stay in Copenhagen and Aarhus, plus a cruise ship fee, to help fund tax cuts. The Copenhagen Post says it needs backing from other parties. No start date is given, and the Liberal Party opposes it. Three nights would be 60 kr (about €8) per person. Both are newspaper reports, so check your booking page for any city charge.
Danish prices include 25% VAT. Service is included in restaurant, hotel and taxi bills, tipping "is not a tradition", and 10% is plenty if you want to.
CopenPay is the other new thing. Visit Copenhagen says it launched on 22 June 2026 and runs all year. Using its app, you earn perks such as free or discounted museum entry, bike hire, a free coffee or a discounted lunch for cycling, arriving by train or staying four days or more.
🕳️ Where the money leaks
- 🛏️ A room for one: a room costs the same for one or two, so the solo total is 6,650 kr against 4,760 kr each for a pair
- 🍴 Three-course dinners: 350 to 450 kr, against 150 kr for lunch
- 🎡 Tivoli: the gate is the start, with rides and food on top
- 🚕 Airport taxis: roughly 250 to 400 kr, against a 30 kr airport ticket on the Metro
