Torre Aquileia: Jesolo's Modern Skyscraper Landmark

Torre Aquileia is a striking residential skyscraper in Jesolo, Italy, that represents the city's 21st-century architectural ambition. Inaugurated in May 2009, this modern tower stands as a prominent vertical landmark in a region traditionally known for its lower, horizontal constructions. Upon its completion, it became the tallest building in the Veneto region.

A New Vision for Jesolo

The construction of Torre Aquileia was a key part of Jesolo's comprehensive urban redevelopment initiative. Built on the site of the former Hotel Aquileia, the tower was envisioned as a pivotal element in transforming the seaside resort into a modern 'city on the sea.'

The principal architect, Carlos Ferrater, deliberately designed the skyscraper to rise perpendicularly against Jesolo's predominantly flat landscape. His goal was to create a distinctive landmark and a 'window on the sea,' connecting the urban center with the beach and symbolizing the city's contemporary identity.

Architectural Design and Features

Designed by Ferrater's Office of Architecture in Barcelona (OAB), Torre Aquileia reaches a height of 94 meters to its spire and contains 22 floors. The building's modern architectural style is defined by its unique polygonal shape, which was specifically chosen to provide multiple viewing angles of the Adriatic Sea and Venetian Lagoon while ensuring privacy for each of its 84 apartments.

The facade features an 'envelope' of sheet metal sunscreens, designed to create the visual effect of a superposition of villas. The top of the tower is crowned with a metallic structure known as 'Le Vele' (The Sails). This distinctive feature is composed of alveolar aluminum panels and steel profiles, creating a memorable silhouette on the Jesolo skyline. Despite its sophisticated design, locals affectionately gave the tower the ironic nickname 'Il Matitone,' meaning 'The Big Pencil.'

The Tower Today

Torre Aquileia primarily serves as a residential building. Many of its 84 apartments function as aparthotel accommodations, frequently rented by tourists and visitors who can enjoy amenities like private beach access and swimming pools. The double-height ground floor is a commercial area, housing an atrium, a cafeteria, and other businesses.

The project also includes the Nuova Piazza Aquileia, a 2000-square-meter public square surrounding the tower. This vibrant space features shops, cafes, and restaurants, serving both residents and the public and integrating the skyscraper into the city's social fabric.
