Tram & bus (VBZ)
Dense networkTrams and buses cover the whole city on the same ZVV ticket as the S-Bahn. A short Kurzstrecke ride is CHF 2.80; anything crossing zone 110 needs the CHF 4.70 one-hour ticket.
S-Bahn (ZVV)
Fast cross-cityThe S-Bahn shares the same ZVV zone tickets as trams and buses and is the fastest way between the Altstadt, Zürich West and Oerlikon, and the only rail link to the airport.
Walking
Flat riverside walkPedestrian zones run along both banks of the Limmat through the Altstadt. Trams keep the right of way even inside these zones, so you still have to look both ways at crossings.
Zürich Card

How much does it cost to visit Zürich?
Everyday costs are moderate: a beer or lunch will not ruin a trip, and ZVV tickets cost the same by tram, bus or train. The City Tax adds CHF 3.50 per person per night at check-in, an industry-set charge rather than a government tax, and an airport taxi costs six to ten times the CHF 7.20 train fare.

Cash or card?
Cards and mobile wallets work almost everywhere, including ZVV ticket machines, trams and taxis. Cash is rarely needed, but police found tampered cash machines around the city in 2025, so check a machine before using it and cover the keypad when entering your PIN.

Altstadt (Kreis 1)
First visit, walkabilityBoth banks of the Limmat, Bahnhofstrasse and the guild houses on Augustinergasse. Pedestrian zones cover most streets, but this is the most expensive part of the city to sleep in.
Zürich-West (Kreis 5)
Nightlife, design shopsA former industrial quarter around the Freitag flagship store, built from shipping containers, and the Prime Tower. Trams reach the Altstadt in minutes, though parts feel unfinished after dark.
Seefeld (Kreis 8)
Lakeside, quieter staysVillas and boutiques between the Opera House and the Zürichhorn park, with lake bathing at Seebad Tiefenbrunnen. A 15 to 20 minute tram ride from the Altstadt, and quiet for late-night food.
Langstrasse (Kreis 4)
Budget nightlifeZurich's densest strip of bars and clubs, cheaper than the centre and two tram stops from the Hauptbahnhof. Police record more distraction theft and drug dealing here than elsewhere, worse at night.
Oerlikon (Kreis 11)
Airport and rail accessDirect S-Bahn to the airport and Hauptbahnhof in a few minutes, plus the Hallenstadion arena. It trades Altstadt charm for business-district streets that empty out in the evening.

All very well written and illustrated. Perhaps some of the 'history' was a little 'contrived', i.e. the successes and achievements of the certainly key protagonists slightly embellished, and the selection of a distinctly pedestrian monument to Otto, the second last, pointless! More on the classic architectural, perhaps even planning and development of the old city, would have been very welcome. Otherwise, it was great and the quizzes interesting and fun.

Is Zürich safe?
Zurich recorded 44,434 police-registered offences in 2025, down 8% on 2024, and violent crime against visitors is rare. The practical risks are non-confrontational: distraction theft around the Hauptbahnhof, tampered cash machines, and a tram right of way that catches out pedestrians who assume every car-free street is safe.
HB distraction theft
Kantonspolizei Zürich has reported pickpockets using mock dance moves to distract commuters at the Hauptbahnhof before stripping their jewellery. Step back if a stranger gets unusually close, and keep valuables zipped in a front pocket.
ATM tampering
Police caught suspects who had modified more than a dozen cash machines across the city in 2025. Check a machine for loose or glued-on parts before inserting your card, and always cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
Trams have priority
Article 38 of the Swiss road traffic law gives trams priority, including when turning, and they cannot swerve or stop quickly. Look both ways at every crossing, even ones inside the Altstadt's pedestrian zones.
Reporting a theft
Report a simple theft with no witness or known suspect through the Suisse ePolice online form, available around the clock, and keep the confirmation for your insurance claim.
Medical help
Call 144 for an ambulance in a life-threatening emergency. For an urgent but non-critical problem, the cantonal Ärztefon on 0800 33 66 55 directs you to a doctor, dentist or pharmacy.

Knabenschiessen shuts offices
Most city administration offices close on Monday 14 September 2026 for Knabenschiessen, Zurich's shooting festival and funfair for teenagers on the Albisgütli hill.
Sunday shopping means HB
Ordinary shops close on Sundays, but the roughly 180 stores inside Zürich HB's ShopVille stay open, along with Stadelhofen, Oerlikon station and the airport.
Quiet hours shift at weekends
Night quiet hours run 22:00 to 07:00 most of the year, moving to 23:00 to 07:00 on Fridays and Saturdays during summer time, when terraces and balconies get noisier.
Swiss German by default
Shopfronts and menus use standard German, but everyday conversation is Zürütdeutsch. Locals switch to standard German for visitors without being asked.

Yes. About 70% of the city's water is treated lake water, and the rest comes from springs and groundwater, delivered through the same network as the roughly 1,200 public fountains. Only a fountain marked 'kein Trinkwasser' is not for drinking.
The train reaches Zürich HB in 10 to 15 minutes for CHF 7.20. Tram 10 covers the same route in 30 to 35 minutes for the same fare. An official metered taxi takes 10 to 20 minutes and costs roughly CHF 50 to 70.
A 24-hour pass for zone 110 costs CHF 9.40 and covers every tram, bus and S-Bahn ride in the city for the day you validate it. Buying single CHF 4.70 tickets only works out cheaper if you make two trips or fewer.

Yes, at marked river baths such as Flussbad Oberer and Unterer Letten, but swimming is banned between Quaibrücke and the Dynamo arts centre because of boat traffic, and the current is stronger than it looks even where swimming is allowed.
