Athens on a Budget: What Three Days Really Costs

Intro

Many budget guides still count on the five-day combined ticket that once covered the Acropolis and six other sites for €30. Greek press and a parliamentary report say it ended with the new pricing on 1 April 2025, and the ministry's Acropolis page lists only single tickets. The Acropolis now costs €30 all year, and the winter discount has gone. Checked in October 2026, three days (two nights) in Athens come to roughly €130 to €190 lean, €320 to €500 normal and €645 to €945 comfortable, for one person, before the accommodation fee and the airport transfer.

Ciceru's self-guided Athens walk is a cheap way to see the centre: €7, 4 km and about 2 hours, starting at Hadrian's Arch, with a story and a quiz question at each of its 6 stops and a free 500 MB global eSIM.

⚡ Quick answer

  • 🎒 Lean (hostel bed, bakery and souvlaki meals, the Acropolis only): about €130 to €190 per person for three days
  • 🙂 Normal (3-star hotel, a taverna dinner, Acropolis, Agora and the Acropolis Museum): about €320 to €500
  • 💎 Comfortable (upper mid-range hotel, restaurants, one more paid site): about €645 to €945
  • ⚠️ What changed: the combined ticket has ended, the Acropolis is €30 in every month, and free entry for all is limited to five fixed dates plus winter Sundays
  • 🏛️ Accommodation fee: the climate crisis resilience fee is added per night by your hotel or host. Ask for the amount before you pay

💶 A day in Athens, three ways

These cover food, drink and local rides. Beds and paid sights come separately below. All are estimates built from current guide prices, since no official price list exists for cafes and tavernas.

Lean: a coffee (€2.50), a bakery breakfast, a souvlaki or gyros pita for lunch, another for dinner with a drink, and a couple of metro rides. About €20 a day.

Normal: a sit-down coffee and pastry, a pita lunch, and a proper taverna dinner with a drink, which guides put at €25 and up. About €43 a day.

Comfortable: a hotel or cafe breakfast, a restaurant lunch, a restaurant dinner with wine, and the odd taxi. About €85 a day.

🎟️ The ticket change that costs the most

The Acropolis is the biggest single cost in the city, and the old workaround has been removed. The Ministry of Culture's own Acropolis page lists €30 full price and €15 reduced, bought on the official platform at tickets.hh.gr. Before April 2025 the price was €20 in summer and €10 in winter, and a €30 combined ticket added the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Kerameikos and the Lykeion for five days.

That bundle was abolished, according to Greek press and an opposition parliamentary report of June 2026. Some ministry pages for smaller sites still print a "5-day package, €30" line, and it looks like a leftover, so do not plan on it.

Current prices for the places most visitors add:

  • 💶 Acropolis: €30 (ministry page). Guides say entry is by timed slot, so book ahead in summer
  • 💶 Ancient Agora of Athens: €20, which covers the site and its museum (ministry page)
  • 💶 Acropolis Museum: €20, €10 reduced, per its own website. It is run separately from the state sites, so its ticket is separate from the Acropolis
  • 💶 Temple of Olympian Zeus: about €20 per press and guides, not confirmed on an official page, so check before you go

The Acropolis, the Agora and Olympian Zeus now add up to about €70 (Kerameikos is another €10), where the old ticket covered the lot for €30. Pick the one or two you care about.

🆓 Free days and who gets in free

The state-run sites, the Acropolis and the Agora included, are free for everyone on these dates, per the ministry's own pages:

  • 📅 6 March, 18 April, 18 May
  • 📅 The last weekend of September (26 and 27 September in 2026)
  • 📅 28 October, a Wednesday in 2026 and the next one coming up
  • 📅 From 1 November to 31 March: the first and third Sunday of each month, so 1 and 15 November in 2026. Some site pages still print first Sundays only, but a ministry reply to Parliament in July 2026 confirms the third Sunday

No free Sundays between April and October turned up in the announcements, so do not plan around one. The Acropolis Museum is not covered by the state rule. Its own page lists free entry on 6 March, 25 March, 18 May and 28 October.

Free any day: EU citizens under 25 with ID, plus other groups on the ministry's list. EU citizens aged 65 and over pay half from 1 October to 31 May. Free days are busy, and a free ticket for the Acropolis may still need a slot, so check tickets.hh.gr first.

🛏️ Where to sleep and what it costs

These ranges come from one private 2026 hotel guide and are wide, because Athens prices swing by date. Booking.com and similar sites block automated checks, so confirm your own dates:

  • 📍 Plaka: under the Acropolis, touristy. €80 to €200
  • 📍 Koukaki and Makrygianni: walking distance to the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, with local bars. €60 to €200
  • 📍 Pangrati: residential, near the Panathenaic Stadium. €40 to €120
  • 📍 Psyri and Gazi: nightlife, noisy at weekends. €30 to €120
  • 📍 Exarchia: student district, the cheapest of the central areas. €30 to €80
  • 📍 Syntagma and Kolonaki: the dearest, from €100 and €120 up
  • 🛏️ Hostel dorm beds: €20 to €50

A bed outside the Acropolis ring saves more than any food trick.

🍽️ Food: local price vs tourist price

Souvlaki and gyros pitas, the bakery koulouri and the standing coffee are the cheap end. Current guides put a pita at about €3 to €5, a coffee at €2.50 to €4.50 and a mid-range taverna dinner at €25 to €40. Prices near the Acropolis and the Plaka squares sit at the top of those ranges, so read the menu board outside before you sit. The dishes themselves are in what to eat in Athens.

🚇 Transport for three days

The centre is walkable, and the metro covers the rest. Fares, passes and the airport leg are in getting around Athens. The totals below count a few euros a day for rides and leave out the airport transfer.

🏛️ The accommodation fee

Greece charges a climate crisis resilience fee per night on hotels and short-term rentals. The tax authority says the accommodation collects it from you and pays it to the state, issuing a separate proof of collection. The amount depends on star rating, season and, for rentals, size. A current table was not on a page that could be verified, so ask for the exact amount at booking and treat it as extra on top of the room rate.

💰 Three-day total: for one, for two

Built from the day rates above, plus two nights' accommodation and the paid sights. The accommodation fee is not included.

  • 🎒 Lean, solo: 3 days at €20, the Acropolis (€30) and 2 dorm nights at €20 to €50 is about €130 to €190
  • 🙂 Normal, solo: 3 days at €43, three paid sights (€70) and 2 hotel nights at €60 to €150 is about €320 to €500
  • 💎 Comfortable, solo: 3 days at €85, four paid sights (€90) and 2 hotel nights at €150 to €300 is about €645 to €945

Two people share the room, and everything else doubles. A lean pair spends about €260 to €380 between them, a normal pair about €520 to €700, and a comfortable pair about €990 to €1,290.

⚠️ Where the money actually leaks

Buying every site separately without a plan. Without the combined ticket, three paid sites run to about €70. Choose two or three, and do the rest from outside.

Free days at the wrong time. The free Sundays only run from November to March, so a summer trip gets none.

The wrong ticket seller. Buy on tickets.hh.gr, which the state ticketing body ODAP names as the official platform.

Eating beside the Acropolis. Walk ten minutes towards Koukaki or Psyri before choosing a table.

An unplanned bed. The same star rating can differ by €100 a night between Plaka and Pangrati.

❓ FAQ
