Budapest on a Budget: What Three Days Really Costs
Last updated: October 2026
Intro
Three days in Budapest costs about 36,000 forint (roughly €100) a head before the bed if you eat at lunch canteens and skip the paid sights, about 78,000 (€210) for an ordinary trip, and about 115,000 (€315) with Parliament, a bath and sit-down dinners. Prices below were checked in October 2026. Three things most guides still get wrong: the Gellért bath has been shut since 1 October 2025, Parliament charges non-EEA visitors 14,000 Ft since 1 January, and the Budapest Card now starts at 17,990 Ft.
A self-guided walk in the Ciceru app, with a story and a quiz question at each of its 7 stops and a free 500 MB global eSIM, is a cheap way to see the centre: €7 (about 2,600 Ft), 4 km, about 3 hours, starting at the Hungarian Parliament.
⚡ Quick answer
- Per person, 3 days, before the bed: lean about 36,000 Ft, normal about 78,000 Ft, comfortable about 115,000 Ft
- Money: forint, not euros. About 368 Ft to the euro and 432 Ft to the pound. Always pay in forint
- The one overspend: a thermal bath on a weekday. Széchenyi is 13,200 Ft, Rudas 12,000 Ft, Lukács 7,000 Ft. Gellért has been closed since 1 October 2025, with reopening expected in 2028
- Biggest price jump: Parliament, 14,000 Ft for non-EEA visitors and 7,000 Ft for EEA visitors
- Extras: restaurant service charge (15% at Gerbeaud), tourist tax at your hotel, a bath towel at 6,900 Ft
💱 Money first: the forint and the traps
Hungary does not use the euro. The Hungarian National Bank's rate on 2 October 2026 was 367.87 Ft to the euro and 431.82 Ft to the pound. Euro figures here are approximate.
- Pay in forint. If a card terminal or cash machine asks whether to charge you in euros or pounds, choose forint and let your own bank do the conversion
- Do not change money on the street. The UK Foreign Office advises official ATMs or banks
- Read the menu before you order. The same page warns that some bars charge very high amounts, that some taxi drivers take commission for recommending them, and that tourists have been taken to cash machines to settle a bill
📅 What a day costs: three ways
Per person, per day, before the bed, averaged from the totals below. Meals use one canteen menu (Frici Papa, Király utca 55), where mains run from 2,499 to 3,999 Ft.
- 💶 Lean, about 12,000 Ft (€33): a canteen soup and main for 4,700 Ft, about 3,000 Ft for shop breakfast and snacks (an allowance, not a quoted price), a share of a travelcard, and a cheap sight every other day
- 💶 Normal, about 26,000 Ft (€70): two soup-and-main meals at 7,600 Ft each, 1,500 Ft for coffee, a travelcard share, and a bath, museum and church over the three days
- 💶 Comfortable, about 38,000 Ft (€105): two soup, main and dessert dinners at about 10,800 Ft each with 15% service, a coffee and cake stop, and Parliament plus a bath over the trip
🛏️ Where you sleep, and the tourist tax
Hotel rates move with the date and none could be confirmed on a first-party page. Two 2026 budget guides put a dorm bed at about €12 to €18 and a 3-star room at about €35 to €55 a person, roughly 4,500 to 6,500 Ft and 13,000 to 20,000 Ft.
Tourist tax. The rate is set locally and was not confirmed on an official page. One Budapest hotel's own notice describes it as 4% of the room price per night, excluding VAT, with under-18s exempt. Press reports give a 2026 national ceiling of 830 Ft a person per night, and some places use a fixed amount instead. On a 20,000 Ft room, 4% is 800 Ft. The property bills it, so check whether your booking shows it or asks for it on arrival.
🍲 Food: local price against tourist price
A lunch canteen (kifőzde) is the local price. At Frici Papa, serving since 1997, the daily list for 2 October 2026 had chicken soup at 2,199 Ft, a roast chicken leg at 2,499 Ft and dill chicken ragout at 2,999 Ft. The regular menu runs goulash soup 3,599 Ft, chicken paprikash 3,799 Ft, beef stew 3,999 Ft and Somlói galuska 1,999 Ft.
The tourist price is the same soup plus extras. Cafe Gerbeaud, on Vörösmarty tér, says on its own menu page that prices include VAT and that a 15% service charge is added. Apply that to a 3,599 Ft goulash and it becomes 4,139 Ft. Look for a line called szervizdíj on the menu and the bill, and do not tip on top when it appears. What to order is in What to Eat in Budapest.

♨️ The one place to overspend: a thermal bath
A bath is a three-hour activity for about the price of a non-EEA Parliament ticket. Pick a weekday, because Friday to Sunday adds 1,000 to 3,000 Ft.
- 💶 Széchenyi: Monday to Thursday 13,200 Ft, Friday to Sunday 14,800 Ft, holidays and peak days 15,800 Ft, with a locker. Before 09:00 the "Good morning Budapest" ticket is 10,500 Ft (11,800 Ft on Fridays). Online Fast Track adds 2,000 Ft. Open 07:00 to 20:00 Monday to Thursday, 07:00 to 22:00 Friday, 08:00 to 20:00 weekends
- 💶 Rudas: 12,000 Ft Monday to Thursday, 15,000 Ft Friday to Sunday, 16,000 Ft in peak season, all zones included. No entry under 14
- 💶 Lukács: 7,000 Ft Monday to Thursday, 8,000 Ft Friday to Sunday, and 3,800 Ft for the last two hours on weekdays. Its Finnish sauna and some changing rooms are closed for renovation, so check what is open
- 🚫 Gellért: closed since 1 October 2025, with reopening expected in 2028, according to its own website. Older lists still sell it
The verdict. If you pay for one bath, Rudas on a weekday (12,000 Ft) or Széchenyi before 09:00 (10,500 Ft) is the best use of money. Lukács at 7,000 Ft is the saving. At Széchenyi, a cabin ticket is listed at 1,000 Ft, a safe at 1,100 Ft and a towel at 6,900 Ft, so bring your own.

🎟️ Attractions, and which are free
- 💶 Parliament: from 1 January 2026, 14,000 Ft for non-EEA visitors and 7,000 Ft for EEA citizens. Students aged 6 to 24 pay half. Book only on the Parliament's official ticket platform
- 💶 Fisherman's Bastion: 1,700 Ft, card only, for the upper terraces and towers. The ticket applies 09:00 to 19:00 for most of the year and 09:00 to 21:00 from 1 June to 30 September, and the lower part is open without one. It is free on 15 March, 20 August, 23 October and 24 to 31 December
- 💶 Matthias Church: 3,400 Ft adult, 2,700 Ft student, tower 4,000 Ft
- 💶 Hungarian National Museum: 3,500 Ft. Free on 15 March, 20 August and 23 October. Closed Monday
- 💶 St Stephen's Basilica: entry is ticketed, not donation. The Basilica publishes its prices only as images. A third-party guide from December 2025 gave about 2,600 Ft for the interior and 6,800 Ft with the panorama terrace and treasury, which could not be confirmed, so check on the Basilica's ticket site
Budapest Card maths. The 72-hour card is 29,990 Ft (24 hours 17,990 Ft, 48 hours 23,990 Ft, from 1 May 2026). It covers public transport, free entry to Lukács bath and 30 or more museums and attractions, but Parliament is not listed. Take off the 72-hour travelcard (5,750 Ft) and you need about 24,000 Ft of entries to break even. Lukács (7,000 to 8,000 Ft) plus the National Museum (3,500 Ft) gets you to about 11,000, so it pays only if you plan a museum a day.

🚇 Transport for three days
Walk the centre and ride trams and metro for the rest. BKK's price page lists a 72-hour travelcard at 5,750 Ft and a 24-hour one at 2,750 Ft, so confirm on bkk.hu before you buy. Fares, airport tickets and luggage are in Getting Around Budapest.
🧮 Three-day totals for one and for two

💸 Where the money leaks
- Bath extras. Towel 6,900 Ft, Fast Track +2,000 Ft, weekend rates
- Service charge. 15% at Gerbeaud, then a second tip on top
- Currency. Euro or pound conversion on a terminal, and street exchange
- The wrong ticket. An unused Budapest Card, or a Gellért ticket from an old blog
❓ FAQ
How much does three days in Budapest cost?
About 36,000 Ft (€100) per person before accommodation on a lean plan, about 78,000 Ft (€210) on a normal one, and about 115,000 Ft (€315) when you add Parliament and sit-down dinners. Add your room and the tourist tax.
Should I pay in forint or euros?
Forint. Hungary is not on the euro, so decline any offer to charge you in euros or pounds and do not change cash on the street.
Is the Budapest Card worth it?
Rarely, if you walk. The 72-hour card is 29,990 Ft and Parliament is not listed. It pays only with a museum a day and a free Lukács visit.
✅ Before you go
Check each venue's own site, because bath and museum prices change at the turn of the year. Read the menu for szervizdíj and pay in forint. For the big picture, start with Budapest Explained. To see the centre cheaply, the Ciceru walk is €7, and the Budapest page has the rest.
