Stara Ćuprija: The Historic Stone Bridge of Konjic
FAQ
When was Stara ćuprija originally constructed?
The bridge was commissioned between 1682 and 1683 by Ali-aga Hasečić during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV, replacing earlier deteriorating wooden river crossings.
How was the bridge rebuilt after its destruction in World War II?
Between 2006 and 2009, the bridge was reconstructed to its original 17th-century design. Builders retrieved fallen blocks from the riverbed and avoided modern cement, instead using 2,408 tufa blocks bonded with iron clamps, molten lead, and a traditional mortar of slaked lime, river sand, and crushed brick.
Can vehicles cross Stara ćuprija?
No. The bridge is exclusively a pedestrian thoroughfare. It is freely open to the public 24 hours a day and connects Konjic's old bazaar with residential districts.
