Ivo Andrić Statues in Travnik: A Nobel Legacy in Bronze

The city of Travnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina, pays tribute to its most famous son, Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, through a series of public sculptures. These artworks celebrate the profound connection between the author and the city that inspired much of his literary work.

A City's Tribute to Its Nobel Laureate

Ivo Andrić was born near Travnik in 1892 and the city served as a primary inspiration for his writing. His novel "Travnik Chronicle" vividly portrays the city during the Ottoman era. In 1961, Andrić was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the only Nobel laureate from the former Yugoslavia. His literary achievements brought international recognition to Travnik, cementing his status as a crucial figure in the city's cultural identity. Today, Travnik honors his legacy with at least six public sculptures and busts located throughout the city.

The Interactive Library Statue

A prominent sculpture of Ivo Andrić was unveiled in front of the Travnik City Library in June 2023. Created by sculptor Damir Šabić, this interactive piece depicts the author seated on a bench, holding a book and pen. The design intentionally allows visitors to sit next to the figure for photographs, aiming to create a popular tourist attraction.

An Unexpected Interaction

Within two months of its installation, the new interactive statue experienced an unusual form of public engagement. Its removable accessories—the pen, book, and glasses—were stolen. The City Library, which anticipated the statue would become a notable attraction, attributed the thefts primarily to the curiosity of children interacting with the sculpture. The library announced plans to replace the missing parts and noted it would use surveillance footage to involve police in any future incidents.

Other Andrić Sculptures in Travnik

Beyond the library statue, other significant sculptures honor the author. A statue titled 'Odavde je mali otišao u veliki svijet veliki Ivo' (From here the little one went to the big world, big Ivo) by Milutin Jović has stood in the park before the Travnik Municipality building since 1978. Additional sculptures and busts can be found at his reconstructed birth house (now a memorial museum), the courtyard of the Church of St. Ivan Krstitelj, and in the village of Ovčarevo, where Andrić was briefly exiled in 1915.
