An Elevated Panorama Over Bamberg

Schöner Blick is an elevated open viewpoint situated on the southern slope of Michaelsberg hill in Bamberg. Located along the terraced abbey gardens below the former Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael, the vantage point is reached via pedestrian paths such as Benediktinerweg and Erthalweg. Rather than a standalone building or designated municipal monument, the name marks a scenic terrace along the hillside paths.

From this position, the lookout directly faces Bamberg’s historic Old Town (Altstadt). The panorama encompasses the dense sea of red-tiled roofs, the Regnitz River, the complex of the Neue Residenz, and the distinctive four towers of Bamberg Cathedral / Dom. On clear days, the vista extends past the historic core toward the rolling countryside of Franconian Switzerland.

The Seven Hills and Monastic Viticulture

Bamberg was historically built across seven distinct hills, earning it the traditional designation of "Franconian Rome." During the Middle Ages, Michaelsberg and the neighboring Domberg served as the ecclesiastical core of the prince-bishopric. Religious monuments were strategically placed on these high ridges to look down upon the burghers' commercial settlements along the riverbanks.

Viticulture on the southern slopes of Michaelsberg dates back to the 12th century, when Benedictine monks first cultivated terraced vineyards, orchards, and gardens beneath the abbey. Commercial viticulture on the slope came to an end in the early 19th century following secularization, leaving the hillsides fallow for nearly two centuries.

The Revival of Urban Winemaking

Although Bamberg is internationally famous for its historic brewing traditions and smoked beer (Rauchbier), the slope below Schöner Blick preserves an active urban winemaking heritage. In 2009, in preparation for the 2012 Bamberg State Garden Show (Landesgartenschau 2012), the Bürgerspitalstiftung Bamberg restored the monastic tradition by planting a 0.8-hectare vineyard with roughly 4,000 Silvaner vines. The first commercial harvest was bottled in 2011 under the Bamberger Stiftsgarten label.

The grapes grown directly below the terrace are bottled into traditional bulbous Franconian Bocksbeutel and marketed under the label Michelsberger Silvaner. Proceeds from these sales benefit the Bürgerspitalstiftung, a charitable foundation established in 1237 to provide eldercare in Bamberg.

Atmosphere and Modern Use

Set apart from the cobblestone roads and water traffic of the lower town, Schöner Blick offers a quiet environment characterized by sun-warmed sandy soils, fruit orchards, and rows of grapevines. Today, the terraced grounds are administered and leased for cultivation by the Bürgerspitalstiftung. The lookout regularly serves as an outdoor stop for guided vineyard walks and wine tastings focused on the local Silvaner produced right on the hillside.
