Bunar želja: Cetinje's Historic Well of Wishes

Cetinje, Montenegro

Located on Dvorski trg (Palace Square) in Cetinje, the 'Crnogorkin bunar želja', or Montenegrin Woman's Well of Wishes, is a significant cultural fixture in Montenegro's historical capital. It serves as a modern reintroduction of a traditional element to the city's main square, reflecting Cetinje's identity as a spiritual and cultural center.

A Modern Well with Historic Roots

The idea for a new well was conceived by painter and writer Dimitrije Popović and initiated by Vesko Pejović of the NGO 'Cetinje – moj grad'. Its design was incorporated into the reconstruction of Dvorski trg by architect Svetislav Popović. The well was officially opened on November 13, 2013, during the celebration of Cetinje's Day.

This modern structure honors a historical precedent. According to the memoirs of Simo Popović, a well with a fountain existed on the square in 1878/79. This earlier well had restricted access, with water being available only twice a day.

A Story of Damage and Renewal

Just over three years after its inauguration, the well faced a significant setback. On January 6, 2017, it was severely damaged when struck by a snowplow during routine snow clearing operations on the square. This incident necessitated a complete reconstruction.

The renewal process was a dedicated effort. It involved a months-long search, led by Dimitrije Popović and Aleksandar Dajković, for a suitable stone block measuring one cubic meter. The Ministry of Culture supported the reconstruction with a contribution of 5,000 euros, ensuring the well's return to Palace Square.

The Well of Wishes Today

Today, the reconstructed Bunar želja is a popular tourist attraction. It embodies the city's commitment to preserving its cultural motifs. The Cultural and Artistic Society 'Njegoš' is entrusted with the well's care and maintenance.

Each day from 10 am to 12 pm, members of the society, dressed in traditional Montenegrin costumes, are present at the well. They provide tourists with brochures and explain the well's symbolism in English, enhancing its role as a cultural and historical point of interest.
