The Blue Palace: Montenegro's Presidential Residence

The Blue Palace stands in Cetinje, Montenegro, as a significant historical and political landmark. Known for its distinctive blue facade, this two-storey building in the late Empire style now serves as the official residence for the President of Montenegro, linking the nation's royal past with its contemporary sovereignty.

A Royal Residence

Construction of the palace took place between 1894 and 1895 under the supervision of Italian architect Camillo Boito. King Nikola I of Montenegro commissioned the project as a home for his son and heir, Crown Prince Danilo Petrović Njegoš. Prince Danilo and his wife lived in the residence until 1916, when Montenegro faced Austrian occupation. Due to the eventual dethronement of the Petrović Njegoš dynasty, Crown Prince Danilo never ascended to the throne, leaving the palace's original purpose unfulfilled.

A Century of Transformation

Following the departure of the royal family, the Blue Palace adapted to the changing political landscape of Montenegro. During the interwar period, it housed the Cetinje Gymnasium. In the era of the Socialist Republic of Montenegro, it was transformed into a gallery and museum. The palace also played a role in the nation's cultural life, hosting events like the 'Cetinje Biennial' in the 1990s. A significant renovation, funded by a grant from the Norwegian government, was completed in 2006.

The Presidential Palace Today

The Blue Palace has functioned as the official residence of the President of Montenegro since 2010. While the country's executive and legislative branches are based in the capital city of Podgorica, the presidency remains in the former royal capital of Cetinje. The palace's interior is not open to the public, but its gardens are accessible for photography. Visitors can often be seen observing the presidential guards, who are stationed at the main entrance 24/7.

Architectural Legacy and Condition

The design of the Blue Palace was influential, serving as an architectural model for other residences built for the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty across Montenegro. Despite its prestigious status, a 2026 report indicated the building was in poor condition, requiring repairs to its roof, facade, and interior elements. Interestingly, only two mirrors inside the palace are authentic, original pieces from its royal past.
