Praia do Portinho: Madeira's Historic Surfing Cove

Praia do Portinho is a tranquil pebble cove on Madeira's southwest coast, located in the historic village of Jardim do Mar. This beach, composed of basalt stones, offers a unique blend of quiet seaside charm and a world-renowned surfing legacy. With a pier and a ramp for sea access, it serves both locals and international visitors drawn to its powerful waves and serene environment.

A Historic Seaside Village

Jardim do Mar, meaning 'Garden of the Sea,' was founded in the 15th century as an isolated fishing enclave. Its name is thought to derive from the wild flowers that once carpeted the area. For centuries, the village was accessible primarily by boat or difficult footpaths, a geographic isolation that helped preserve its traditional character with narrow streets and low-lying houses. The construction of roads in the 1960s significantly improved access to this once-remote community, which gained its independence as a parish in the 18th century.

The Portinho Pier and Beach

The beach's most prominent feature is the Portinho Pier, a single spur 'I' shaped structure. Initial construction began in 1904, with further works completed in 1928, marking early efforts to improve the village's maritime facilities. These developments addressed a long-standing issue; as early as 1817, it was noted that the parish lacked a 'capable port.' Today, the pebble beach and its access ramp are a central point for bathers and athletes.

A World-Renowned Surfing Destination

Jardim do Mar rose to international fame as a premier surfing destination. The powerful waves at Praia do Portinho attracted enthusiasts from around the globe, cementing its reputation by hosting the Red Bull Big Wave Challenge in 2000 and the World Surfing Championship in February 2001. A surf school now operates at the beach, catering to the sport's enduring popularity and honoring local pioneers like Orlando Pereira.

The Altered Wave

A significant and surprising aspect of the area's history is the impact of modern development on its famous surf. The construction of a coastal promenade and seawall, intended to provide protection and better sea access, inadvertently and permanently altered the powerful right-hand surf wave. The break, once a purely natural phenomenon, is now shaped by these concrete structures.

Village Highlights

Beyond the beach, the village of Jardim do Mar holds cultural points of interest. The Parish Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, consecrated in 1907, was architecturally inspired by the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Nearby, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, dating from 1736, houses a small image of St. Anthony carved from basalt, said to have originated from a rock fall that miraculously spared a passerby's life.
