This industrial wealth drove a demand for fashionable retail spaces. Developed under the Marquess of Bute, the arcades were built to cut east-to-west across long north-to-south thoroughfares. Opened in 1858, it is the city's oldest arcade and holds a Grade II listing. The High Street Arcade followed in 1885, originally housing a concentration of Victorian apothecaries and fortune tellers. The Castle Arcade, designed by architect Edwin Seward in 1887, is a Grade II* listed structure that survived damage from the 1941 Cardiff Blitz.
