Berlin on a Budget: What Three Days Really Costs
Last updated: October 2026
Intro
Berlin is still easy on the wallet for beds, bakeries and street food, but the centre stopped being cheap when the big sights started charging. Checked in October 2026, three days and two nights cost about €122 to €155 per person lean, €342 to €449 normal and €663 to €856 comfortable. Older guides miss four things. The Humboldt Forum has charged €9 per main exhibition since October 2025. The Pergamonmuseum is shut until 4 June 2027. A single ride in zones AB has been €4.00 since 1 January 2026. And a city tax of 7.5% is added to every paid room.
For the centre on foot, Ciceru has a €7 self-guided walk in the Ciceru app: 4 km, about 2 hours, 11 stops along Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate, with a story and a quiz question at each stop and a free 500 MB global eSIM.
⚡ Quick answer
- 🎒 Lean (hostel dorm, bakery and döner meals, free sights plus one €7 walk): €122 to €155 per person
- 🙂 Normal (budget hotel or private room, a sit-down dinner, two paid museums): €342 to €449
- 💎 Comfortable (4-star room, restaurant dinners, four paid sights including the TV Tower): €668 to €861
- ⚠️ What changed: Humboldt Forum €9 per exhibition since October 2025, Pergamonmuseum closed until June 2027, fares up in January 2026, city tax 7.5%
- 🏛️ Free and worth it: the Reichstag dome, with online registration and photo ID
Totals cover two nights, three days of food, transport and sights, and the city tax, but not flights or airport transfers.
💶 A day in Berlin, three ways
Sight, fare and tax figures come from the operators and the authorities. Food and room figures are working estimates, because cafés and hotels set their own prices and no official list exists.
Lean: a bakery coffee and roll (€4), a döner (€7), a supermarket or Imbiss dinner (€7), two rides on a 4-trip card (€6.20). About €24 a day.
Normal: a café breakfast (€6), a döner or Currywurst lunch with a drink (€10), a sit-down dinner with a drink (€22), a beer or coffee on the side (€5), three rides on a 4-trip card (€9.30). About €52 a day, plus sights.
Comfortable: a café breakfast (€12), a restaurant lunch (€18), a dinner with wine (€45), a cocktail (€10), a 24-hour ticket (€11.20). About €96 a day, plus sights.
🛏️ Where to sleep and what it costs
There is no official room-rate list, so treat these as indicative ranges from 2026 hostel guides and operator pages. Trade press reported that average room rates slipped in 2025 despite good occupancy, but prices swing with events and weekends.
- 🎒 Hostel dorm bed: roughly €20 to €35 a night. The a&o chain's own site lists beds from €11 to €13 at its four Berlin houses, the cheapest 7 km from the centre at Kolumbus, but those are the lowest rates, not a promise for a Saturday in June
- 🙂 Budget hotel or hostel private room: about €70 to €120 a night
- 💎 4-star room: about €140 to €230 a night
As local advice, not a price list: the best value is a few stops out on the S-Bahn or U-Bahn, in Friedrichshain, Neukölln or Wedding. The nearer Mitte and Charlottenburg are to the sights, the nearer to the top of each range.
🏛️ The Berlin city tax
The Übernachtungsteuer is 7.5%, in force since 1 January 2025, according to the Berlin finance authority, and the hotel or host collects it. The authority's page does not spell out the base. A tax adviser's summary says it is the net room price before VAT, with breakfast and parking outside it, which works out at about 7% of the price you see. Check your booking.
- 💶 A dorm bed at €20 adds about €1.40
- 💶 A €100 hotel room adds about €7
- 💶 A €180 room adds about €12.60
Two rules changed. Since 1 April 2024, business stays are taxed too, and since 1 January 2025 the old exemption for stays over 21 days has gone. Look at the final booking screen to see whether the tax is in the headline price.
🌭 Food: local price vs tourist price
- 🥙 Döner: the national average was €7.11 in 2025, according to YouGov figures reported in March 2026, and prices dipped by €0.50 to €1 at some Berlin stands. Plan on about €6.50 to €8 for a full one
- 🌭 Currywurst: about €4 to €6 at a stand, an estimate. Konnopke's Imbiss on Schönhauser Allee, open since 1930, publishes hours (Tuesday to Friday 11:00 to 18:00, Saturday 12:00 to 19:00) but no prices
- 🍺 Beer and drinks: pubs and bars set their own prices, so read the board. A Späti, the corner kiosk, is handy at midnight but dearer than a supermarket
- 🍾 Pfand: single-use bottles and cans normally carry a €0.25 deposit, so supermarket bottles are worth returning. Shelf labels say which ones
The biggest gap is location. A tourist menu has photos, six languages and a board outside, usually within sight of the Brandenburg Gate, Friedrichstrasse or Alexanderplatz. Walk two streets away. For what to order, see what to eat in Berlin. Most Berlin shops close on Sundays, so buy picnic food on Saturday: see what is closed in Germany.

🚇 Transport for three days
A single in zones AB is €4.00 (up from €3.80 on 1 January 2026), a 4-trip card is €12.40, and a 24-hour ticket is €11.20 until 31 December 2026, then €11.50. The airport is in zone C, so an AB ticket will not cover it. Fare logic and the BER trap are in getting around Berlin.
🎟️ Attractions: what costs money, what does not
All prices below were checked on the operators' own sites in October 2026.
Reichstag dome. Free, but registration is required in advance online, with a participant list and original photo ID. The dome is closed 19 to 30 October 2026 for maintenance, and on 24 December.
Museum Island. The Neues Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie are €14 each. The Museumsinsel ticket is €24 for all the island's museums on one day. The Pergamonmuseum's main building is closed until 4 June 2027, so lists that make it the centrepiece are out of date. Under-18s go free.
Humboldt Forum. Each main exhibition is €9, the roof terrace is €3, and under-19s go free. Some areas stay free, including the Palace Cellar and the Sculpture Hall.
Museum Pass Berlin. €32 for three consecutive days, covering over 30 museums' permanent collections, including Museum Island and the Humboldt Forum. Special exhibitions cost extra. Two single museums at €14 each (€28) beat it. The Island ticket plus one Humboldt Forum exhibition is €33, so the pass saves about €1 on those two. It pays back from the third paid museum.
Berlin Cathedral. €15, reopened on 1 March 2026 after crypt renovation. DDR Museum. €13.90. TV Tower. From €20 online for the observation deck, VAT included.
Free things such as the Brandenburg Gate, Bebelplatz and Unter den Linden are covered in free things to do in Berlin.

💰 Three-day total: for one, for two
Built from the day rates above plus two nights and the city tax, worked out on the net room price. Sights are the Ciceru walk (€7) for every tier, plus two museums for normal (Neues Museum €14, DDR Museum €13.90) and, for comfortable, Museum Island €24, Humboldt Forum €9, the Cathedral €15 and the TV Tower from €20.
- 🎒 Lean, solo: 3 days × €24.20 + €7 + 2 dorm nights at €20 to €35 + €2.80 to €4.90 tax = €122 to €155
- 🙂 Normal, solo: 3 days × €52.30 + €34.90 + 2 nights at €70 to €120 + €9.80 to €16.80 tax = €342 to €449
- 💎 Comfortable, solo: 3 days × €96.20 + €75 + 2 nights at €140 to €230 + €19.60 to €32.20 tax = €663 to €856
For two, only the room is shared. A normal pair spends about €533 to €640, roughly €267 to €320 each. A comfortable pair spends about €1,027 to €1,219, roughly €513 to €610 each. A lean pair saves least, because two dorm beds cost about what two singles do: roughly €245 to €309 together.
⚠️ Where the money actually leaks
Paying to look at what is free outside. The Brandenburg Gate, Bebelplatz and Unter den Linden cost nothing, and Ciceru's €7 walk strings them together with 11 stops. Museum entry on the way, such as the Humboldt Forum, is separate.
Eating at the landmarks. The TV Tower's own Currywurst lunch package is €42, close to two lean days of food, against a few euros at a stand.
Overlapping tickets. The Museum Pass, the Island ticket and a Humboldt Forum exhibition ticket overlap, so work out which single option covers your plan and buy that one.
