The Cheapest Coworking Spaces in Berlin

Last updated: October 2026

Intro

Older fee schedules for the Staatsbibliothek still list a paid library card. The card is now free, and so is the online version you can sort out before you land. Some price round-ups also quote a betahaus day pass of €20, while the operator itself charges €35 plus VAT. Here is what holds up, checked in October 2026.

Ciceru also has a self-guided walk in Berlin in its app, with a story and a quiz question at each stop and a free 500 MB global eSIM. It follows Unter den Linden, the street where the Staatsbibliothek has its older building.

⚡ Quick answer

  • Best free desk: Staatsbibliothek, Haus Potsdamer Straße, walk-up seats, free library card, open until 22:00
  • Best with no card at all: Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek or Berliner Stadtbibliothek, free wifi without registering
  • Cheapest paid day pass confirmed by the operator: betahaus Kreuzberg, €35 plus VAT (about €41.65)
  • Main warning: many cafés restrict laptops, and comparison-site day-pass prices are often not the operator's own
  • VAT note: German VAT is 19%; coworking prices are often quoted without it

🆓 Free places to work

Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Haus Potsdamer Straße

  • 📍 Potsdamer Straße 33, 10785 Berlin
  • 🕐 Monday to Saturday 08:00 to 22:00, Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, closed on public holidays
  • 🆓 The library card is free. Register online before you arrive (valid 30 days) or in person (valid one year). You need photo ID and to be 14 or over
  • 🪪 The card is shown at the reading room entrance, and it also unlocks the library's own wifi

Most seats in the general reading room need no booking. Large opaque bags and backpacks are not allowed inside, so use a day locker (a €1 or €2 coin as deposit, emptied by 22:00).

Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Haus Unter den Linden

  • 📍 Unter den Linden 8, 10117 Berlin
  • 🕐 Same hours as above. Atlantis is one of its silent reading rooms
  • 🆓 Same free card

The central choice if you are staying in Mitte. No food in the reading rooms, only drinks in closable bottles.

Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek

  • 📍 Blücherplatz 1, 10961 Berlin, Kreuzberg
  • 🕐 Monday to Friday 10:00 to 21:00, Saturday 10:00 to 19:00, Sunday 11:00 to 17:00
  • 🆓 Free wifi, and you can visit without a card. A card (€10 a year, with ID and an address in Germany) is only for borrowing

Berliner Stadtbibliothek

  • 📍 Breite Straße 30 to 36, 10178 Berlin, Mitte
  • 🕐 Monday to Friday 10:00 to 21:00, Saturday 10:00 to 19:00, closed Sunday
  • 🆓 Same free wifi, no card needed

Both city libraries close on public holidays, including 24 to 26 December and 31 December to 1 January.

Unconfirmed: the Humboldt University library (Grimm-Zentrum). Its site would not load, so ask first.

💶 Cheap paid options

betahaus Kreuzberg

  • 📍 Rudi-Dutschke-Straße 23, 10969 Berlin (a second site is at Lobeckstraße 30, Moritzplatz)
  • 🕐 Day pass access Monday to Friday 09:00 to 16:30
  • 💶 Day pass €35 excluding VAT, free coffee and tea, phone booths when free

St. Oberholz, Rosenthaler Platz

  • 📍 Rosenthaler Straße 72a, 10119 Berlin, Mitte
  • 🕐 Café on the ground floor, Monday to Friday 08:00 to 19:00, Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 18:00
  • 💶 No day price on its website, memberships start at €209 a month. One price round-up lists €15 a day, so ask at the desk

Factory Berlin, Mindspace and Impact Hub Berlin did not show a day rate on their pages. A marketplace lists smaller desks at about €20 to €25 a day (Workish, Space Shack), but those are its figures, not the spaces', so confirm first.

☕ Laptop rules in cafés

The Tagesspiegel reported these laptop rules in March 2023:

  • Kaffee.Bar, Prenzlauer Berg: at most six laptop tables
  • Sorrel (Neukölln), 19 Grams (Mitte) and Annelies (Kreuzberg): no laptops at weekends and on holidays
  • Two Trick Pony, Kreuzberg: no laptops at all
  • Five Elephant, Kreuzberg: laptops discouraged

These policies were not confirmed with the cafés this month, so ask first.

📶 Wifi, plugs and noise

  • 📶 Wifi: the Staatsbibliothek's own network needs the card. The library's wifi page also names the open Free_Wifi_Berlin network, a pilot scheme
  • 🔇 Noise: all the Staatsbibliothek reading rooms are quiet, with a separate laptop-free area. Take calls outside
  • 📞 Calls: betahaus has phone booths, free when not taken
  • 🔌 Sockets: not confirmed for any venue, so bring a charged laptop

🚶 A lunch-break walk

From the Berliner Stadtbibliothek: the Humboldt Forum is about 250 m away. Carry on along Unter den Linden past the Neue Wache to Bebelplatz: about 1 km, 15 minutes. Both Staatsbibliothek buildings have a weekday canteen from 11:30 to 14:30, and the one on Potsdamer Straße is open to the public.

From the Staatsbibliothek on Potsdamer Straße: walk through Potsdamer Platz to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, then on to the Brandenburg Gate. About 1.5 km, 20 minutes.

From betahaus: Checkpoint Charlie is 100 m away. Follow Friedrichstraße north to Gendarmenmarkt, then to Bebelplatz: about 1.4 km, 20 minutes.

Bebelplatz, the Humboldt Forum, the Memorial and the Brandenburg Gate are all stops on Ciceru's Berlin Through the Ages walk. It starts at the Wappenbrunnen and follows Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate, about 2 hours and 4 km across 11 stops, for €7 with a free 500 MB global eSIM. The full self-guided walk in the Ciceru app suits a free afternoon better than a lunch break.
