The Cheapest Coworking Spaces in Budapest
Last updated: October 2026
Intro
Plenty of "free coworking in Budapest" lists still treat the city's central library as a free walk-in desk. It is not. The Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library charges visitors a daily card of 1,700 forints, up from 1,100 before 2023, and the central branch was shut for four weeks this summer. Every price below was checked in October 2026, and Hungarian VAT is 27%, so check whether a day rate includes it.
Ciceru also offers a self-guided walk of Budapest in its app, with a story and a quiz question at each stop and a free 500 MB global eSIM. The walk starts at the Hungarian Parliament, and St Stephen's Basilica, close to KAPTÁR below, is the seventh and last stop.
⚡ Quick answer
- Cheapest decent desk: the Ervin Szabó Central Library, 1,700 Ft for a daily card, wifi included
- Cheapest coworking day pass: KAPTÁR, from 5,200 Ft plus VAT (about €14 plus VAT on its English page)
- Most clearly priced: Impact Hub Budapest, 8,255 Ft including VAT
- Main warning: the library is not a free walk-in for visitors, and it shuts for long stretches and on holidays, including 23 and 24 October 2026
- Catch at the National Library: a day pass is listed at 1,200 Ft, but wifi and hours were not confirmed
🆓 Free and nearly free places to work
Ervin Szabó Central Library (FSZEK)
- 📍 Reviczky utca 1, 1088 Budapest, 8th district
- 🕐 Monday to Friday 10:00 to 20:00, Saturday 10:00 to 16:00, closed Sunday, on the library's own hours page. Check the day, because hours change around holidays
- 💶 Daily card 1,700 Ft: use of the library on site, wifi, and the subscribed databases, but no borrowing
- 🪪 A free registration card (400 Ft admin fee for the physical card) also includes on-site use and wifi, but it asks for original ID and, for non-EU visitors, a residence permit or an official accommodation registration, so most short-stay visitors will just buy the daily card
Under-25s and over-70s register free. The library was closed from 6 July to 2 August 2026, then ran short hours until the end of August, and shut on 20 and 21 August for the national holiday. Its closure list shows every FSZEK library shut on Friday 23 October and Saturday 24 October 2026, so check the date before you cross town.
National Széchényi Library

This is a research library, not a laptop lounge. It also shut its reading rooms from 20 to 24 August 2026 for the national holiday.

💶 Cheap paid options
KAPTÁR
- 📍 Révay köz 4, 1065 Budapest, close to the Basilica
- 💶 Short-term coworking from 5,200 Ft plus VAT on the Hungarian page, about 6,600 Ft with VAT. The English page quotes from €14 plus VAT, which is about the same money, so the final price depends on the day and the product
- 🕐 No hours published; the booking system showed slots from 08:30 to 19:00
- ✅ Meeting rooms from 4,400 Ft plus VAT an hour, useful if you need a call room
Impact Hub Budapest

☕ Laptop-friendly cafés
As named in a March 2026 Budapest cafe roundup:
- Salt Bakery x CAUSE, Zrínyi utca 9: free wifi, big windows, easiest on weekday mornings and early afternoons
- Művház Kávézó, Bartók Béla út 33: free wifi and long communal tables, best on weekdays
Neither guide quotes a written laptop policy, and the cafés were not checked first-party. Ask before you unpack, and order something every hour or two.
📶 Wifi, plugs and noise
- 📶 Library wifi comes with both the daily card and the registration card. At the National Library, ask at the desk
- 🔌 No venue here publishes its socket count. Library desks and paid spaces are the safer bet than cafés
- 🔇 For a video call, book a KAPTÁR meeting room by the hour. A library reading room is a silent space
🚶 A lunch-break walk
Working from KAPTÁR? St Stephen's Basilica is close to Révay köz, and it is the seventh and last of the seven stops on Ciceru's Budapest walk, which starts at the Hungarian Parliament. From the Central Library, expect roughly 2 km, about 25 to 30 minutes, up Károly körút to Deák Ferenc tér and on to the Basilica (an estimate, not a timed route).
The full self-guided walk in the Ciceru app is 4 km and about 3 hours across seven stops: the Parliament, Buda Castle, Fishermen's Bastion, Matthias Church, the Chain Bridge, Café Gerbeaud and the Basilica. It costs €7, with a free 500 MB global eSIM.
