The Heart of the Altstadt

At the very center of Celle's old town sits a 13th-century town hall wrapped in a 17th-century optical illusion. The Markt is Celle's historic central market square, located along the primary north-south axis of the Altstadt. Serving as the essential geographic transition point between the ducal Residenzschloss precinct and the wider grid of over 450 historic timber-framed houses, the pedestrianized square remains the lively administrative and economic heart of the city.

A Ducal Foundation

Following Duke Otto the Strict's relocation of Celle to the Aller River in 1292, the square was laid out as the town's primary economic hub. Originally known as Marktstrate, it functioned as the main venue where merchants delivered goods under ducal protection.

The civic space expanded between 1580 and 1593 with a Wedding House annex. This addition accommodated courtrooms and hosted citizen festivities. Today, the 1292 Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) still dominates the square, currently functioning as the municipal Tourist Information center, theater administration office, and a venue for civil marriages.

Architectural Illusions and Historic Taverns

The Altes Rathaus features a rare 1697 baroque trompe-l'oeil facade painted by H. J. Suersen. This faux architectural relief was painted directly onto flat plaster. It remained hidden for centuries until conservators rediscovered it under 13 layers of paint during restoration work in 1984 and 1985.

Beneath the town hall lies the Ratskeller. Featuring original 1292 Gothic cross-vaults, the basement space holds 1378 ducal tavern rights, making it the oldest registered tavern in Lower Saxony.

Outside, historic pillory columns anchor the south gable. These columns originally stood at the Rathaus until 1785 and were sold in 1863 to serve as private gateposts before the city returned and re-erected them in 1941.

Modern Gatherings and Market Sounds

Today, the Markt offers a pedestrianized gathering space updated with modern seating and greenery. The square continues its historic mercantile function by hosting a traditional weekly market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Throughout the year, it also serves as the venue for seasonal wine and Christmas markets.

On market mornings, the air fills with the sounds of vendor calls and street chatter. This lively atmosphere is traditionally accompanied by church bells and daily brass chorales played from the adjacent Stadtkirche tower. Previously, the Celler Glockenspiel also rang out above the Markt from a private jeweler's shop between 1973 and 2010, before the city relocated the bells to a nearby intersection.
