A Memorial to Folklore Pioneers

Located at Markt 23 in the upper old town, the Brüder-Grimm-Stube honors Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The brothers studied law at Philipps-Universität Marburg between 1802 and 1806. Under the mentorship of legal scholar Friedrich Carl von Savigny, they gained access to a vast private library and met key figures of the German Romantic movement. This intellectual environment sparked their interest in folk poetry and medieval literature, ultimately leading to their famous compilation of the Children's and Household Tales.

Despite modern celebrations of their time in the city, the Grimms were poor students who often felt alienated by wealthier peers. They frequently complained about Marburg's exhausting staircases, steep hills, and mud. Additionally, the Brüder-Grimm-Stube serves purely as a commemorative institutional space. The brothers did not live in this specific room, instead residing in other local lodgings, such as a property on Barfüßerstraße.

Contemporary Art and Historic Showcases

Operated by the City of Marburg's Cultural Office, the intimate parlor room sits inside a traditional timber-framed building next to the 1527 Town Hall. The venue hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions, photography projects, and university student showcases. During the city's 800th jubilee, the space famously hosted the "8 Objects for 8 Centuries" installation, presenting individual artifacts from the Landgrave Castle collection.

The Brüder-Grimm-Stube incorporates multimedia programming to bring Marburg's history to life.
