Tarquinia is famous for its Etruscan tombs, but the town above them has a story of its own. This self-guided walking tour takes you through the medieval centre, which was called Corneto until 1922, in eight stops along one easy line from west to east. You start at the Romanesque church of Santa Maria in Castello, on the cliff edge where the town began, then pass the gate tower, the cathedral, Palazzo Vitelleschi, the tower houses of Via delle Torri, the little square of San Pancrazio and the Palazzo Comunale, and you finish at the medieval walls. Audio stories explain what you see from the street, and short quizzes keep you looking at the details. The walk is about 1.1 kilometres and takes around an hour and a half. It works entirely from the outside, and the painted tombs of the Monterozzi necropolis and the National Museum make a natural add-on.
