Budapest Christmas Markets 2026: Vörösmarty, the Basilica and What to Eat

Last updated: September 2026

Intro

Budapest has two big Christmas markets, and they are 650 metres apart. If you only have one evening, spend it at the Basilica market on Szent István tér: it has the facade light show, the tall tree and the longer hours. Give Vörösmarty tér half an hour on the way. One thing to know first: at the time of writing, checked in September 2026, neither organiser has published 2026 dates. Their sites still show last year's season, 14 November 2025 to 1 January 2026.

Disclosure: Ciceru earns a commission if you book luggage storage through our Radical Storage link, and you get 10% off. It does not change what we recommend.

Want to see the city between market stops? The Budapest self-guided walk in the Ciceru app is €7, 3 hours and 4 km, with a story and a quiz question at each of its 7 stops and a free 500 MB global eSIM.

⚡ Quick answer

  • Dates: 2026 dates not confirmed by the organisers at the time of writing. Last year both opened on Friday 14 November; the Basilica ran to 1 January, Vörösmarty's stalls to about 28 December, then a New Year's Eve party on the square
  • Which one: the Basilica for your evening, Vörösmarty for a short stop and a coffee
  • Light show: on the Basilica facade, every 30 minutes from 17:30 in 2024 and 2025
  • Cheapest good meal: one dish at a fixed 1,600 Ft (about €4.40) at the main food stalls in 2024 and 2025
  • Baths: Gellért is closed until about 2028. Széchenyi is open, from 13,200 Ft (about €36) on a weekday
  • Luggage: station lockers are cheap but small; Radical Storage has 45 spots from €3.90 a day, 10% off with our link

📅 Dates and hours for 2026

The honest position: nobody official has said yet. adventbazilika.hu still reads "2025. november 14-től 2026. január 1-ig", and vorosmartyclassicxmas.hu still says "every day from 14th of November 2025". Both organisers have opened on a Friday in mid-November for years: 18 November 2022, 17 November 2023, 15 November 2024 and 14 November 2025. Last year, opening dates were reported from 22 October, so check both sites again in late October.

Last year's hours, as a guide only

  • 🕐 Basilica (2025): Monday to Thursday 11:00 to 22:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 23:00, Sunday 11:00 to 22:00
  • 🕐 Basilica holidays (2025): 24 December 11:00 to 15:00, 25 and 26 December 11:00 to 20:00, 31 December 11:00 to 03:00, 1 January 11:00 to 18:00
  • 🕐 Vörösmarty (2025 season): Monday to Thursday and Sunday 11:00 to 21:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 22:00

Calendar notes for 2026: 24 December is a Thursday, and first Advent Sunday is 29 November. If the 2025 pattern holds, the 24 December afternoon close means the market is a lunchtime visit that day, not an evening one.

⚖️ Vörösmarty vs the Basilica, honestly

Vörösmarty tér is a compact square at the top of Váci utca, the main tourist street. In 2025 it had a transparent snow globe around the Vörösmarty statue, a light show inside it, and a free miniature railway for children. It is easy, central and the first one most visitors meet. The Gerbeaud café on the same square (Vörösmarty tér 7 to 8, open 09:00 to 20:00 most days, until 21:00 Friday and Saturday) is handy if the stalls are packed.

The Basilica market on Szent István tér has more room, roughly 100 Hungarian craft exhibitors according to Hungarian press in October 2025, a tree of nearly 12 metres, evening concerts and the light show. It closes an hour later than Vörösmarty on weekend nights (23:00 against 22:00, going by the latest published hours for each). Come here for dinner, not a quick look.

Prices are not the deciding factor. A late-November 2025 price check by Economx found basic mulled wine at 1,500 Ft at the Basilica and 1,900 Ft at Vörösmarty. Telex, a day earlier in the season, reported 1,500 Ft at both. Either way the gap is small.

Verdict: Basilica for the evening, Vörösmarty for the first half hour. If you must pick one, pick the Basilica.

💡 The light show timings

The show is projected onto the Basilica facade, and you watch it from the market square. The organiser's own release said projections run "daily from 5:30 PM every half hour", and Hungarian press repeated the same schedule for 2025, with a new film about the building's 120-year history. The last screening time is not published on an organiser page, so check before you plan a late one.

Be on the square a few minutes before 17:30 so you have a spot for the first screening. If it is packed, the next one is 30 minutes later.

🥘 Food worth queueing for

The fixed-price dish. Both organisers ran a rule in 2024 and 2025: at each main kitchen, one dish stays at 1,600 Ft (about €4.40). Themed weekends capped dishes at 2,500 Ft (about €6.80) in 2024, covering goose, pork knuckle, fish and stews. Ask for "the 1,600 forint dish" and check it is on the board.

What to order

  • 🍷 Forralt bor (mulled wine): 1,500 to 1,900 Ft for a basic glass in late 2025
  • 🥖 Lángos (fried flatbread): cheese and sour cream was 3,200 Ft at Vörösmarty and 3,940 Ft at the Basilica in one 2025 check
  • 🍥 Kürtőskalács (chimney cake): plain 2,800 Ft in one report, filled versions 3,200 to 3,600 Ft
  • 🥧 Rétes (strudel): about 1,900 to 2,000 Ft in one report

Check before you order: full plates cost several times more. Beef goulash was reported at 6,500 to 6,800 Ft and fried sausage at 5,500 to 5,700 Ft in 2025, so the 1,600 Ft dish is the value option.

Mugs: Vörösmarty served mulled wine in ceramic mugs visitors could keep in 2025. No deposit is published for either market, so ask before you pay.

♨️ Thermal baths in December

Gellért is closed. Its own site says the bath closed on 1 October 2025, with reopening expected in 2028. Older guides still recommend it. Skip it.

Széchenyi (Állatkerti körút 9 to 11, reached by the Millennium Underground or trolleybus 72) is the reliable choice.

  • 🕐 Hours in 2026: Monday to Thursday 07:00 to 20:00, Friday 07:00 to 22:00, Saturday and Sunday 08:00 to 20:00. From 18 December 2026 to 6 January 2027 it opens at 08:00, and on 25 December and 1 January it closes at 20:00. 24 December is not listed, so check
  • 💶 Prices in 2026: entry with a locker is 13,200 Ft on weekdays (about €36) and 14,800 Ft from Friday to Sunday (about €40). A higher 15,800 Ft rate applies on holidays and peak days, and the page does not say which dates
  • 💳 Buying: book online to skip the queue; the desk entrance opposite the Circus takes bank cards only. The Budapest Card is accepted for the locker ticket

Rudas (Döbrentei tér 9) opens at 06:00 and closes at 22:00 on Mondays and 20:00 on other days, according to its site, which is undated. It admits ages 14 and over only, and night-bathing tickets are sold online only. Check the Rudas site for prices.

A Friday soak at Széchenyi, open until 22:00, then a late dinner is a good use of a spare evening. It is not a market day plan: bath and market together eat the afternoon.

🚶 A walking route linking both

The walk is short. Vörösmarty tér to the Basilica is about 650 metres, roughly 9 minutes at a steady pace, by OpenStreetMap's walking route.

  1. 15:30, Vörösmarty tér. Do the stalls while it is quiet. Coffee at Gerbeaud if the queue at the stalls is bad.
  2. 16:15, Deák Ferenc utca. Walk up it and on to the Basilica. Some smaller markets have opened nearby in past years, including one in the City Hall Park area, with 2025 dates reported by Time Out Hungary. No 2026 dates are published for any of them yet.
  3. 16:45, Szent István tér. Eat here, at the 1,600 Ft stalls.
  4. 17:30, the first light show. Stay for a second one if it is dry.

This order puts your longest stop at the bigger square, where the light show is.

💶 Costs and payment

  • 💶 Currency: forints only. The ECB reference rate on 29 September 2026 was 366.38 Ft to the euro, so euro conversions here use about 365 and are approximate; and the rate moved between about 349 and 368 from June to September
  • 💳 Cards: the organisers advertised cashless payment in 2024, and OTP SimplePay logos appeared on the 2025 release. Carry some forints for small stalls; see our note on whether markets take card
  • 🎟️ Entry: both markets are open-air with no ticket to walk in. Neither organiser site lists an admission fee
  • 🧥 What to wear: see what to wear at a European Christmas market

🧳 Luggage storage in Budapest

At the stations. Keleti has automated lockers on the underpass level opposite the Passenger Centre, open 03:45 to 01:00 on weekdays and 03:45 to 02:00 at weekends. Nyugati has lockers outside the station building at the end of platform 6, by the ticket machines, open 02:30 to 00:50. Both come in two sizes: small, 350 x 500 x 750 mm inside, and large, 500 x 600 x 750 mm. MÁV does not publish the price on those pages, so check at the machine.

Where Radical Storage wins. A big suitcase may not fit a 500 x 600 x 750 mm locker. Radical Storage lists 45 locations in Budapest from €3.90 a bag a day, with no size or weight limit and a €10,000 guarantee per bag, and its own page notes there are no lockers on Vörösmarty tér itself, only partner shops nearby. It suits a hotel checkout that leaves an afternoon in the centre, with a drop near the square. 10% off through our link.

  • 🚉 Passing through Keleti or Nyugati: station lockers, if your bag fits
