The Cheapest Coworking Spaces in Vienna

Intro
Two names still turn up on "free coworking Vienna" lists as dead ends: the University of Vienna's grand reading room, closed for renovation since September 2024 and not due back until spring 2027, and Talent Garden's Alsergrund space, which shut for good in 2023 after water damage wrecked the building. Here is what actually works, checked in September 2026.

- 🆓 Free wifi and 326 study and reading seats, no library card required
- 🪪 A card is only needed to borrow items: €45 a year, or €6 for a day card
The 19:00 close on weekdays is the catch: plan a morning or afternoon session, not an evening one.
Austrian National Library reading rooms

- 🕐 Every day, including Saturday and Sunday, 09:00 to 21:00, closed 25 July to 5 August and public holidays

Open until 21:00 every day, it's the latest quiet desk in the centre, weekends included.
Skip the university library for now. Its main reading room has been shut since 23 September 2024, not due back before spring 2027, and the study areas that remain need a valid university account for wifi.
The coffee house, with a catch. You can nurse one Melange for hours here, but several well-known cafés now restrict laptops. Café Phil on Gumpendorfer Straße banned them outright in 2022 and now allows one table on weekdays; J. Hornig Kaffeebar bans them at weekends. Ask first.

- 🗓️ Austrian public holidays: 26 October, 1 November, 8, 25 and 26 December 2026; 1 and 6 January, 29 March, 1, 6, 17 and 27 May 2027. Libraries and some spaces close, check ahead.
🚶 A lunch-break walk
Working from Impact Hub or Loffice in Neubau? Head down Neubaugasse, through the Spittelberg lanes and the Museumsquartier forecourt, then follow Kohlmarkt towards the centre: about 2 km, 25 minutes, passing straight through Michaelerplatz, where excavated Roman and medieval remains lie open in the middle of the square.
Michaelerplatz is also one of the eleven stops on Ciceru's main Vienna walk, which starts at St Stephen's Cathedral, five minutes further on along the Graben.
