Vienna has a reputation as an expensive capital, and the big tickets earn it: the Schönbrunn palace ticket is €42. What almost nobody mentions is that a night at the State Opera can cost less than a cocktail if you stand. 🎭 The best-value ticket in Vienna: standing at the opera
Vienna's best-value experience barely makes it into budget guides. A State Opera standing ticket (Stehplatz) usually costs €13 to €18 depending on where you stand, when a seat for the same show can run past €100. The opera sells them only on the day of the performance, online from 10:00 through the State Opera's ticket shop. There are 435 standing places, each with its own subtitle screen in up to eight languages. Check the day's price in the shop, and get to your spot early for a rail to lean on. The Volksoperthe city's second opera house, sells standing room for a few euros too. Neither needs a Vienna Pass or a tour group.

Lean: bakery breakfast, a Würstelstand sausage for lunch, a supermarket or cheap Beisl dinner, free sights, mostly on foot. €16 to €20 a day before your bed.
Normal: café breakfast, a Mittagsmenü lunch, a sit-down dinner with a beer, one paid attraction. €60 to €70 a day before your bed.
Comfortable: a proper breakfast, a nicer lunch, a restaurant dinner with wine, a bigger ticket like the Schönbrunn Palace Ticket, the odd taxi. €110 upward.

🍽️ Food: local price vs tourist price
A Mittagsmenü, a fixed lunch with soup and a main, runs €8.50 to €19 per live listings on mittag.at, most €10 to €14, a proper sit-down meal for less than a coffee-and-cake combo on the Graben. A Käsekrainer at an ordinary Würstelstand costs €4 to €6, a 0.5 litre beer in an ordinary pub €4.50 to €6.50. 🚈 Getting around for three days
The change most guides still miss: Wiener Linien discontinued its own 48 and 72 hour tickets on 1 January 2026. A blog telling you to buy a 72 hour ticket is out of date. What's left: a single ride at €3.00 in the app, a 24 hour ticket at €9.70 and a 7 day ticket (rolling, from your chosen start date) at €25.20. Plenty of Vienna's best bits cost nothing: Schönbrunn's palace park (the palace interior is what you pay for), most church interiors (though St Stephen's nave now takes an €8 ticket), the Ringstrasse, Naschmarkt browsing, the view from Kahlenberg. 🏛️ The Vienna tourist tax
Vienna's Ortstaxe is a percentage of the room price, not a flat per-person fee, and it is rising fast: 3.2% until 30 June 2026, 5% from 1 July 2026, and 8% from 1 July 2027, calculated without VAT and breakfast (per wien.gv.at). For a trip now, add 5% to the room rate; it is often only shown at checkout.

Share a room and the maths changes, because a double costs little more than a single: a normal pair spends roughly €510 to €650 between them, about €255 to €325 each; a comfortable pair roughly €900 to €1,100, about €450 to €550 each. A lean pair in dorms saves least, since two dorm beds cost about the same as two singles.
⚠️ Where the money actually leaks
Costumed "Mozart" sellers. Since 1 July 2026, Vienna has banned costumed ticket sellers from Stephansplatz, Kärntner Straße, Graben and the square in front of the opera, after city checks in 2025 found 136 violations among 303 sellers. They've shifted to nearby squares instead, and the concerts they push are often marked up well above booking Musikverein or Konzerthaus directly.
Kaffeehaus etiquette. A table is yours as long as you like, one coffee is enough, table service is the norm, and tap water comes free alongside your order, not something to ask or pay for.
The Vienna Pass maths. A 3 day pass lists at €175 (often discounted online), covering dozens of sights plus a hop-on hop-off bus, not public transport. It pays off only if you're stacking paid attractions daily; for one a day, buying tickets individually is cheaper.
Restaurant cover charges. A "Gedeck" of roughly €2 to €5 per person for bread and linen is common at smarter restaurants, legal if disclosed, sometimes only on the bill. Ask first if the menu doesn't say.
Tipping. Skipping it reads as a complaint here, not a norm. The custom is 5 to 10%, rounded to a convenient number, stated out loud as you pay, not left on the table.
Guided walking tours. Paid walks through GetYourGuide run roughly €28 to €40 per person for two hours, checked September 2026. "Free" tours aren't free either, a fair tip is €5 to €10.
