Cologne Christmas Markets 2026: All Seven and How to Walk Between Them
Last updated: September 2026
Intro
Cologne's Christmas markets run from 13 November 2026, and the big ones are close enough to link on foot in two easy evenings. The cathedral market opens on 16 November and closes on 23 December, and it is shut on Sunday 22 November. Two things changed since older guides were written: entering the cathedral itself now costs €12, and the Heinzel market opens a week after the cathedral market. Dates and hours checked in September 2026.

⚡ Quick answer
- Cathedral market (Roncalliplatz): 16 November to 23 December, closed 22 November. Free entry

- Heinzel market (Alter Markt and Heumarkt): 23 November to 23 December on Alter Markt, ice rink and Heumarkt until 10 January 2027
- Walking time: cathedral to Alter Markt about 5 minutes, cathedral to the harbour about 21 minutes, cathedral to Neumarkt about 17 minutes
- Cathedral visit: €12 for adults since 1 July 2026, children up to 13 free. The market outside is free
- Luggage: lockers at Köln Hbf first, six minutes on foot from the cathedral market
🆕 What is new for 2026
- The cathedral now charges. Since 1 July 2026 you need a ticket to look around inside: €12 adult, €6 reduced, children up to 13 free. The market on Roncalliplatz is still free
- The cathedral market has the same organiser. The city reran the tender, and on 3 March 2026 it awarded the 2026 to 2030 contract to KW Kölner Weihnachtsgesellschaft, who have run it for years.
- Building work near the cathedral. The city says a second phase of works on the north side, between Trankgasse and Kardinal-Höffner-Platz, started in January 2026 and runs for about two years. It names Roncalliplatz as the walking route around it. A January report warned that parts of Roncalliplatz could be closed for garage repairs; the organiser's 2026 page shows no change, so check before you go
- Heinzel starts later. It opens 23 November, a week after the cathedral, Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz
- Stadtgarten is unconfirmed. Last year it ran 14 November to 23 December 2025. No 2026 dates were published when this was checked

📍 Neumarkt, Markt der Engel: 16 November to 23 December. Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 21:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 22:00. Drink stands stay open an hour later. Closed 22 November, and 23 December closes at 21:00.
📍 Rudolfplatz, Nikolausdorf: 16 November to 23 December. Same hours as Neumarkt, with drink stands open until 22:00 or 23:00 at the weekend. Closed 22 November, closes at 21:00 on 23 December.
📍 Chlodwigplatz: 19 November to 23 December. Daily 12:00 to 22:00, Friday and Saturday until 23:00. Closed 22 November. This comes from the city portal koeln.de, not the organiser, so treat it as likely rather than certain.
📍 Stadtgarten, Venloer Strasse 40: 2026 dates not confirmed by the organiser at the time of writing. Last year it ran 14 November to 23 December, Monday to Friday 16:00 to 21:30 and weekends from 12:00.
Cologne has no official "seven". This is the list the local press usually uses, with Heinzel counted once although it sits on two squares. One extra: Santa's market at the MediaPark runs 19 November to 23 December, Monday to Friday 14:00 to 22:00, weekends from 12:00.
The Sunday to remember: 22 November is Totensonntag, a quiet day of remembrance. Cathedral, Neumarkt, Rudolfplatz and Chlodwigplatz stay closed, the harbour opens at 18:00, and Heinzel has not started yet. Plan another day.
🚶 The seven in one route
Start at Köln Hbf. The cathedral is beside it, and Roncalliplatz is about 6 minutes on foot. Walking times below are rounded from footpath routing on OpenStreetMap at an ordinary pace, so add time for stalls.
Evening one, the river side
- 🕐 Cathedral to Alter Markt: 5 minutes, about 400 m
- 🕐 Alter Markt to Heumarkt: 4 minutes, about 300 m
- 🕐 Heumarkt to the harbour market: about 12 minutes, 1.1 km along the river side
- 🕐 Harbour to Chlodwigplatz: about 12 minutes, 1 km
That is about 33 minutes of pure walking across four markets. Tram line 16 stops at Chlodwigplatz and at Dom/Hbf, so you can ride back instead of walking.
Evening two, the west side
- 🕐 Cathedral to Neumarkt: about 17 minutes, 1.3 km. Lines 16 and 18 stop at both Dom/Hbf and Neumarkt
- 🕐 Neumarkt to Rudolfplatz: about 11 minutes, 800 m
- Stadtgarten is the Belgian Quarter extra, if it opens. Check its location and dates before you plan around it
The east side is compact. The west side is a longer stroll between two big squares. That is why the split works.

🎄 The cathedral market, honestly
It is the busiest one and the easiest to find. The organiser lists over 140 vendors and more than 100 free stage events, plus a children's programme from Tuesday to Thursday. It is a big market in a big space.
The catch is crowds. Local visitor advice is Tuesday to Thursday before noon for space, with Friday evenings and Advent Saturdays the busiest around Roncalliplatz and Heumarkt. Treat that as a rule of thumb. Saturday is the one day it opens at 10:00, so an early Saturday visit beats a Saturday evening.
Then the honest bit about the building. Inside the cathedral is now a ticketed visit at €12 for adults, €6 for students, trainees and NRW social pass holders, and free for children up to 13. Visits usually run 10:00 to 17:45, last entry 17:30, and only 13:30 to 16:30 on Sundays and holidays. So after dark, the market is what you get. If you want the interior, go by day and book at tickets.koelner-dom.de. The tower is a separate €8 and 533 steps with no lift. Worshippers and people lighting a candle through the north entrance do not need a ticket.
Prices: mulled wine at the cathedral market was €5 a cup in 2025, according to a national price roundup (secondary), and a regional news site reported €4.50 plus a €3 mug deposit at Nikolausdorf in 2024. No 2026 prices were published, so treat those as a guide only.
⚓ The harbour and the Heinzel market
The harbour
The harbour market sits beside the chocolate museum on the Rhine, and it has a Ferris wheel with a view back to the cathedral. It starts before everyone else (13 November) and runs longest (3 January 2027), so it is your best option for a very early or very late trip. Hours on 24 to 26 December were not confirmed. Walk from the old town along the riverside, or take bus 133 to Schokoladenmuseum.
Heinzel
Heinzels Wintermärchen is themed on the Cologne legend of the Heinzelmännchen, the small helpers said to do the city's work at night. It has craft lanes on Alter Markt and the ice rink on Heumarkt. Adult rink tickets are listed at €9.50 on weekdays and €11.50 at weekends and on holidays, with skate hire at €6.50 for adults. Tickets are sold online or at the rink.

🍟 Food and drink worth the queue
The market mug is a deposit item: you pay extra and get it back when you return it, or keep it. The amount varies by market, so ask at the stall.
- 🍴 Reibekuchen: crisp potato fritters, served with apple sauce, and the Rhineland classic. Any market will have them. Prices not verified for 2026
- 🍫 Chocolate: the harbour market sits next to the Chocolate Museum, so it is the natural place for sweets
- 🍷 Mulled wine: plan on €5 a cup at the cathedral, going by 2025
- 🧣 Drink stands at Neumarkt and Nikolausdorf stay open an hour later than the market itself
🌙 One evening or two
Two, honestly. Seven markets in one night means a lot of walking and very little standing still. One evening works if you pick one side.
- One evening, tight: cathedral, Alter Markt, Heumarkt and the harbour. About 33 minutes of walking, four markets, and you can ride line 16 back
- One evening, with Neumarkt: cathedral, Neumarkt, Rudolfplatz. Easy and flat
- Two evenings: the east side first, the west side second. Add the Belgian Quarter if Stadtgarten confirms its dates
- Best day: Tuesday to Thursday, midweek, before the evening rush
🧳 Luggage in Cologne
Station lockers first. Köln Hbf is next to the cathedral, and DB's station page lists luggage lockers there. Sizes and prices could not be checked, so look at bahnhof.de before you go. It is the simplest plan if you arrive or leave by train.
When Radical Storage wins. Radical Storage lists 38+ locations in Cologne, with a €10,000 guarantee per bag and no size or weight limit. Prices start around €3.90 a bag a day on their Cologne page. The Köln Hbf partner sits on Komödienstraße, and it is open 10:00 to 20:00, Sundays 10:30 to 20:30, booked online with no walk-ins. It beats the lockers when the lockers are full, when your case is huge, or when you would rather drop it near your hotel. Collect before 20:00 if you want to go on to the market. 10% off through our link.
