🏛️ City hall, parliament and the cathedral question
- St Stephen's Cathedral (the catch) 📍 Stephansplatz. The tiled roof and the façade are free from the square, and the doors open 06:00 to 22:00 for worship, but sightseeing in the nave needs an €8 ticket (€3 for children up to 14), sold Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 11:30 and 13:00 to 16:30, Sundays 13:00 to 16:30. Towers and catacombs are paid too.

- Austrian Parliament 📍 Ringstraße 🕐 book ahead online. Since reopening in 2023, guided tours are free, around 55 minutes, in several languages. The Demokratikum visitor centre, library and café are also free. Photo ID and security screening required.
🌹 Palace gardens for free
- Schönbrunn Park 📍 Schönbrunner Schlossstraße 47 🕐 daily from 06:30, closing between 17:30 in winter and 21:00 in summer. The park, including the view up to the Gloriette, is free. The Privy Garden, maze, Orangery Garden and Gloriette terrace all need separate tickets, and the zoo is fully paid.
- Belvedere Gardens 📍 Prinz Eugen-Straße, between the Upper and Lower Belvedere 🕐 roughly 06:30 to 19:00 in summer, shorter in winter. Free to walk the Baroque terraces. The Privy Garden section needs a museum ticket.
- Augarten 📍 Obere Augartenstraße, Leopoldstadt 🕐 opens 06:30 (April to October) or 07:00 (winter), closing 17:30 to 21:00 by month. Vienna's oldest Baroque garden, free to wander, with the porcelain manufactory's tours priced separately.
- Burggarten and Volksgarten 📍 flank the Hofburg 🕐 Volksgarten opens 06:00 to 22:00 in summer, shorter in winter. Both free city parks. The Volksgarten rose garden, over 3,000 plants since 1862, peaks in late May and June.

- Wien Museum 📍 Karlsplatz 8. The permanent exhibition has been free since the museum's 2023 reopening. Several branches, including the Beethoven Museum, Roman Museum and Clock Museum, are free on the first Sunday of the month, as is the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum.
- Under 19s at federal museums 📍 applies at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Naturhistorisches Museum, Belvedere, Albertina and MAK. Free entry, year-round, no booking needed.
🏙️ Free landmarks around the city
- Hundertwasserhaus 📍 Kegelgasse, Landstraße 🕐 viewable anytime from the street. Only the outside, the coloured, uneven facade, is free. The related Kunst Haus Wien museum nearby is a separate paid ticket.
- Karl-Marx-Hof 📍 Heiligenstädter Straße, Döbling 🕐 anytime, from outside. Vienna's best-known "Red Vienna" housing block is free to walk past. The Waschsalon exhibition inside costs €7, free under 19.
- Naschmarkt 📍 Wienzeile, between Getreidemarkt and Kettenbrückengasse 🕐 stalls Monday to Friday 06:00 to 21:00, Saturday 06:00 to 18:00. Browsing is free, and Saturday adds a large flea market on the same stretch.
🌳 Parks, views and the river
- Prater park 📍 Leopoldstadt, near Praterstern 🕐 open around the clock. The park, including the tree-lined Hauptallee, is free. Only the Wurstelprater funfair rides, including the Riesenrad wheel, are paid, per ride.
- Donauinsel and the Danube Canal 📍 the island runs 21 km; the canal cuts through the centre 🕐 always open. Both are free, for walking, cycling, swimming and, on the canal's embankments, a constantly changing legal street art scene.
- Kahlenberg viewpoint 📍 above Grinzing and Nussdorf 🕐 anytime, best at sunset. The terrace over Vienna and the Danube is free once you're there, reached by a normal transport fare on bus 38A.
🪦 Famous graves for free
- Zentralfriedhof 📍 Simmeringer Hauptstraße 234 🕐 07:00 to 19:00 April to September, shorter the rest of the year. Free to enter and walk. The Ehrengräber section holds the graves of Beethoven and Schubert and a Mozart memorial (he's actually buried elsewhere), among the city's most visited free sights.

- Film Festival Rathausplatz 📍 Rathausplatz 🕐 every summer (the 2026 edition ran from 4 July to 6 September), free entry. Alongside films, several evenings screen Vienna State Opera performances on the big screen, including ballet.
