Krakow Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Prices and a Two-Hour Walk
Last updated: September 2026
Intro
The Christmas market on Krakow's Main Square is planned to run from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, and walking in is free. As a short break, Krakow costs roughly a quarter less than Vienna or Prague. At the mulled wine stall, it does not. Checked in September 2026, the organiser's own 2026 offer gives 27 November to 6 January, but another page from the same organiser still says the market ends on "3 or 6 January", so treat the closing date as provisional. Comparing cities? The Europe Christmas markets 2026 calendar has them side by side.

⚡ Quick answer

- 🎟️ Entry: free, on the Main Square (Rynek Główny)
- 💶 Cost: a two-night break for two was about £674 in 2025 against about £926 for Vienna and £901 for Prague, but a small mulled wine on the square was reported at 35 zł (about €8) in 2025

📅 Dates and hours for 2026
The market's organiser is Artim. Its 2026 offer sheet lists 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Its own market page says the event is planned for 27 November to "3 or 6 January". Last year it ran 28 November 2025 to 1 January 2026, so 2026 opens a day earlier and could run up to five days longer.
PIK Kraków, the city's cultural information portal, lists 10:00 to 20:00 with selected food vendors open later, and free entry. Press coverage of 2025 put food stalls at 22:00, but that was reporting, not the organiser, so plan on 20:00 and treat later as a bonus.
What is new or changed for 2026
- 💡 New lights. On 29 September 2026 the city announced a contractor for four seasons of Christmas lighting, 2026 to 2029. The design takes its shapes from St Mary's Basilica and includes a live tree about 15 metres tall on the Main Square. No switch-on date is published.
- 🚋 Trams renumbered. Krakow rerouted and renumbered tram and bus lines from 26 September, with more changes on 5 October, after the new tram to Mistrzejowice opened. Some lines changed number, so check the number before you ride. The market is walkable from most Old Town hotels, so this may not affect you.
- 🎁 Kraków Card. Artim's 2026 offer gives Kraków Card holders 20% off food at the market, alcohol excluded, and children on the card a 5 zł carousel ticket.

💶 What it costs compared with Vienna and Prague
The Post Office's Christmas Markets Barometer 2025 priced a two-night break for two, including flights, B&B, transfers, restaurant meals with wine and festive snacks, from UK airports. Prices come from tourist offices and are approximate:
- Krakow: about £674
- Budapest: about £664
- Prague: about £901
- Vienna: about £926
So Krakow was roughly 25% cheaper than Vienna or Prague and level with Budapest, not cheaper than it. Its market basket was oddly split. Four glasses of mulled wine were about £22 in Krakow, £21.55 in Vienna, £14.81 in Prague and £14.24 in Budapest. Four gingerbreads or cakes were about £10.56 in Krakow, against £23.35 in Vienna, £14.81 in Prague and £14.73 in Budapest.
Read that as: Krakow wins on the whole trip and on sweet things, and loses on the hot drinks stall. For the rest of your budget, see Prague on a budget and Vienna on a budget. Vienna's mug deposit was €5 at most markets in 2024. No cup deposit for Krakow's market is published, so ask at the stall.
🛍️ Main Square stalls worth your money
The square is about 3.8 hectares, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, so the market has room. In 2025 there were 105 stalls, with sellers from Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary, and more than 600 live Christmas trees around the square.
The organiser lists hand-painted baubles, ceramics, wool, wooden goods, glass and jewellery. Spend on the things made by hand and ask who made them; skip anything that looks identical on the next stall. A wooden nativity scene by the artist Józef Lasik stood on the square in 2025.
📍 The nativity competition. Krakow's szopki, the elaborate nativity scenes which are on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, are judged at the foot of the Mickiewicz monument on the first Thursday of December. In 2026 that should be 3 December, though no date is published yet. Winners are shown afterwards at the Museum of Kraków's Krzysztofory Palace. Check the museum for the start time.
Not every stall takes cards, and it is not published which do. Carry some złoty.

🧀 Oscypek, obwarzanki and the mulled wine question
Oscypek is smoked sheep's cheese with protected origin status from the Tatra region, grilled and served with cranberry. It cost 17 zł (about €3.90) in 2024. No 2026 price is published yet.
Obwarzanek is the boiled-then-baked braided ring sold from street carts. It has protected status, roughly 170 to 180 carts sell it across the city, and the price is on the cart.
Mulled wine is where the money goes. The 2024 market sold 200 ml for 18 zł (about €4.10) and 400 ml for 45 zł (about €10.30). In 2025 the PAP news agency reported a "small" mulled wine at 35 zł (about €8). Other 2025 prices reported: żurek 35 zł, kwaśnica 40 zł, a zapiekanka 30 zł, maczanka po krakowsku 45 zł. Polish media covered tourists complaining about prices in 2024. Check the board, and ask the size before you pay. Euro figures use about 4.37 zł to the euro, the National Bank of Poland rate on 29 September 2026.
🚶 A two-hour route with the market at the end
Start in Kazimierz late in the afternoon so you reach the square in the dark. Distances are from a walking router, so read them as about.
- 📍 Plac Nowy, Kazimierz. Start here.
- 🚶 To Wawel Hill: about 1.2 km, 15 minutes. Check Wawel's December opening hours before you plan to go inside anything, as a two-hour loop leaves little time.
- 🚶 Down Kanonicza and Grodzka: about 1.1 km, 14 minutes to the square, if you do not stop. You will.
- 🎄 The Main Square: arrive on the hour and you may hear the trumpet call from St Mary's tower, which sounds every hour.
The whole route is about 2.2 km, roughly 30 minutes of walking at the router's pace. That leaves about 90 minutes for stops and an obwarzanek before the mulled wine.
From Kraków Główny station to the square is about 1 km, 14 minutes on foot.
🧳 Luggage storage in Krakow
Station first. Kraków Główny is next to the Małopolski bus station, MDA, and MDA's own page lists a staffed left luggage office. It is open daily from 06:00 to 21:45, entered from Wita Stwosza street. Prices are 14 to 17 zł a day by size (S 14, M 15, L 16, XL 17 zł), about €3.20 to €3.90. The page also lists 24-hour lockers at 12 zł (small) and 14 zł (large) per 24 hours, but marked them "temporarily unavailable" at the time of writing. The railway operator's own locker page could not be read, so its prices are not quoted here.
When Radical Storage wins. Radical Storage lists 41 locations in Krakow, from 15 zł a bag a day (about €3.40), with 10% off through the link. That is not cheaper than the MDA office. It wins on location: spots in the Old Town and Kazimierz mean you drop the bag near the market rather than 10 to 15 minutes away at the station. One listing is open 24 hours near Kraków Główny. If you arrive on a morning train and leave late, that helps.
Connecting through and leaving late? The MDA office closes at 21:45, before some evening trains. Check hours for your departure.
🚆 Day trip options
- 🧂 Wieliczka Salt Mine. Tickets sell on the mine's own site. The current price and winter hours could not be read, so check before you go.
- 🕯️ Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial. Entry is free, but a timed entry pass must be reserved online, and none are sold at the gate. December entry times on the museum's page run 07:30 to 14:00, so it is a morning trip, not an evening one. Set aside at least 90 minutes per site.
Neither pairs with an early-evening market visit unless you book the first slot.
🧥 Weather and what to wear
Kraków-Airport's 1991 to 2020 normals give December a mean daily high of 2.7°C and a mean low of minus 3.4°C, with snow lying on about 12 days. November averages a 7.6°C high. Wear layers, a hat and waterproof shoes, because you stand still while queuing for food. The what to wear at a European Christmas market guide has the full list.
