Vienna or Prague for Christmas Markets? An Honest Comparison

Intro

Pick Vienna if the markets themselves are the point. Pick Prague if price matters more, or if you are travelling between Christmas and New Year. Checked in September 2026 against the organisers' 2026 pages, Vienna has at least eleven markets with confirmed dates, the first opening on 6 November. Prague's Old Town Square does not open until 28 November, but it stays open to 6 January, and a drink there costs a good deal less.

Still comparing more than two cities? The Christmas markets Europe 2026 calendar lines them all up by opening date.

⚡ Quick answer

  • Winner: Vienna, for the number, spread and setting of its markets. Prague wins on price and on the week after Christmas
  • Dates: Vienna's Rathausplatz runs 13 November to 26 December 2026. Prague's Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square run 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027
  • Cost: in the Post Office 2025 basket, Vienna cost about £325 on the ground for two people against about £197 in Prague
  • Mulled wine: about €6.25 on average at Vienna's Rathausplatz (2024), CZK 100 (about €4.10) at Prague's Old Town Square (2025)
  • 27 December to 5 January: Prague. Vienna's options are Schönbrunn and the Prater
  • Weather: a draw. December highs average about 5C and lows about 1C in both

🏆 The short answer

Vienna. It has more markets, a longer run before Christmas, and a big one (Rathausplatz, in front of the City Hall) that the city itself says draws almost 3 million visitors a year. You can walk from one market to the next in an afternoon and each has a different mood. That is our view, but the numbers below back it.

Prague is the better pick in three cases. You are watching the budget. You are going in the last days of the year. Or you want one great square and a cheap dinner nearby instead of a market crawl.

💶 Cost compared, like for like

The most useful comparison is the Post Office Christmas Markets Barometer 2025, last updated 21 November 2025. It priced a two-night weekend for two people from UK airports, with flights, accommodation, transfers, evening meals and festive drinks and snacks. Prices come from tourist offices and travel providers, and it is a 2025 snapshot, not a 2026 price.

  • Whole trip: Vienna £926.41, Prague £901.25. Almost level
  • Flights and accommodation: Vienna £601, Prague £704. Prague's hotel and flight line was actually higher
  • Everything on the ground (meals, coffee, mulled wine, cakes, airport transfers): Vienna about £325, Prague about £197
  • Four mulled wines: Vienna £21.55, Prague £14.81
  • Four cakes or gingerbreads: Vienna £23.35, Prague £14.81
  • Meals: Vienna £240.64, Prague £151.25

Read that as: once you have booked, Vienna costs about two-thirds more over the weekend. Prague's flights and hotels were pricier that November, which hid the gap. Your own hotel and flight prices will differ, so price them yourself, then add the on-the-ground gap.

Local prices point the same way, though from different years. A mulled wine at Vienna's Rathausplatz averaged €6.25 in 2024, and a punch €6.50. At Prague's Old Town Square a mulled wine (svařák, 0.2 litres) was CZK 100 in 2025, about €4.10 at 24.4 koruna to the euro, and from CZK 75 at Náměstí Míru. Two drinks: about €12.50 in Vienna, about €8 in Prague.

Neither city has published 2026 stall prices. Recheck in the second half of November.

✨ Atmosphere and crowds

Vienna's markets are different from each other, which is the point. The big one is Rathausplatz, 13 November to 26 December, daily 10:00 to 22:00. Stephansplatz and Schönbrunn open on 6 November. Spittelberg, Am Hof, Freyung, Karlsplatz and the University campus run until 23 December. Rathausplatz, Freyung, Am Hof and Stephansplatz can be strung into one walk of about 1.5 km, roughly 20 minutes without stops (a walking-route estimate, approximate).

Prague is one great square plus supporting acts. Old Town Square (listed with 82 vendors in 2025, with a Czech craft focus) has the tree, the Týn church and the Astronomical Clock behind the stalls. Wenceslas Square shares its dates. Náměstí Míru opens on 20 November, Náměstí Republiky on 25 November. The route between the big two is about 2.3 km. The Prague Christmas markets guide has the full walk.

Crowds: our view, not a count. Vienna spreads people over many sites. Prague puts the visitors in one place, so Old Town Square is the crush and the neighbourhood markets are calm. Go on a weekday, and reach Old Town Square after dark, when the tree is lit.

Two 2026 details older guides miss. Between 21 and 27 November only Prague's neighbourhood markets are open, not Old Town Square. And Vienna's markets do not run to New Year: Rathausplatz ends on 26 December. Our Vienna Christmas markets guide has the closing dates market by market.

🍷 Food and drink

Vienna's market food is Austrian: punch, Glühwein, roasted chestnuts (Maroni), Käsekrainer sausage, Lebkuchen. See what to eat in Vienna. Prague's is Czech: svařák, klobása (grilled sausage) at about CZK 160 (about €6.50) in 2025. Skip langoš at CZK 200 to 240 and trdelník, which what to eat in Prague explains. Prague's food prices are 2025 press figures, not organiser prices.

The mug deposit differs. In Vienna, a €5 mug deposit was standard at the big markets in 2024 (€3 at Spittelberg). For 2026 Ciceru's Vienna guide reports it at the Stephansplatz, Maria-Theresien-Platz, University campus and Schwarzenbergplatz markets (€5), and at the Prater Wintermarkt (€5 mug or €2 cup). No 2026 figure is published for Rathausplatz. In Prague, none was reported at the two big squares in 2025, and Náměstí Míru asked CZK 50 in 2023. Ask before you pay.

Cards: Ciceru's Vienna guide reports card payment at the Stephansplatz, Maria-Theresien-Platz, University campus and Schwarzenbergplatz markets and at the Prater, and Prague publishes nothing for 2026. Carry cash in both. In Prague, pay in koruna if a terminal offers euros. Details are in do European Christmas markets take card.

🚇 Getting around in December

Both centres are walkable. You need transport mostly for the airport and the outer markets.

  • Vienna: a single is €3.00 in the app, €3.20 on paper. The 24-hour ticket is €9.70. The 48 and 72-hour tickets were discontinued on 1 January 2026, so guides quoting them are out of date
  • Prague: a 90-minute ticket is CZK 46 in the app (about €1.90), the 24-hour ticket CZK 140 (about €5.70) and the 72-hour ticket CZK 340 (about €13.90)
  • From the airport: Vienna's City Airport Train is running as a bus until October 2027 because of a rail closure, so take the Railjet to Hauptbahnhof (15 minutes, about €5.50 on a two-zone ticket). Prague has no train at all: trolleybus 59 or bus 100 to the metro on a standard ticket

Full detail is in getting around Vienna and getting around Prague. Prague is cheaper again here: three days of tickets there cost less than two 24-hour tickets in Vienna.

🌡️ Weather and daylight

This does not decide it. The December averages for 1991 to 2020 are almost identical: Vienna about 4.7C high and 0.7C low, Prague about 4.8C and 0.6C. Snow is possible in both and reliable in neither: Prague's December snowfall averages 3.6 cm. Sunset is around 16:00 in both cities (a calculated figure, approximate), so the markets do their best work after dark and you will be outside in the coldest hours. Dress for standing still, see what to wear at a European Christmas market.

🎯 Which for a first visit, which for a repeat

First visit: Vienna. More markets, a bigger main event, more to see between them. Go between 20 November and 23 December and the central markets are all running together, including the smaller ones that close on 23 December.

Repeat visit: Prague. If you have seen Vienna's markets, Prague adds a different setting rather than a bigger version of the same, and it is cheaper to repeat. It is also the only choice of the two for 27 December to 5 January. In that window Vienna keeps Schönbrunn (to 6 January, 10:00 to 19:00 from 25 December) and the Prater Wintermarkt (to 6 January), while Prague keeps both big squares.

Christmas Eve and Day: Vienna's Rathausplatz closes at 18:30 on 24 December, and Stephansplatz at 16:00. Prague's Old Town Square closes at 14:00 that day, then reopens 12:00 to 22:00 on 25 and 26 December, per Czech Tourism's listing. Vienna's Stephansplatz is open 11:00 to 19:00 on 25 and 26 December. Rathausplatz lists no separate hours for those days, so check before you go.

Before 28 November: Vienna, no contest. Prague's centre is not open yet.
