Christmas in Rome, Florence and Naples: What Italy Does Instead of Markets

Intro

Italy does have Christmas markets, but they are not why people go. The real Italian Christmas is the presepe, the nativity scene, and the best place to see it is a single lane in Naples. Rome gives you the Vatican and its piazzas. Florence gives you a German-style market that shuts five days before Christmas. Here is what is confirmed for 2026, checked in September 2026, and what nobody has announced yet.

Ciceru has self-guided walks in the Ciceru app for Rome, Florence and Naples, with a story and a quiz question at each stop and a free 500 MB global eSIM.

⚡ Quick answer

  • Naples: the nativity fair on Via San Gregorio Armeno opens on 1 November 2026, earlier than last year (14 November 2025). The end date is not published yet
  • Florence: the Santa Croce market runs 14 November to 20 December 2026, free entry, over fifty wooden houses. It is closed by Christmas
  • Rome: the Piazza Navona Befana market has no confirmed 2026 dates. Last year it ran 1 December to 6 January
  • Vatican: the museums are closed on 8, 25 and 26 December, 1 January and 6 January. The pope's 2026 Christmas timetable is not out yet
  • Friday 25 December 2026: the Uffizi, the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums are all shut

🎄 Why Italy does not do markets the German way

Germany, Austria and Prague build a market in the main square and put a mug in your hand. Italy builds a nativity scene and sits the family down to eat. The Christmas that matters happens in churches and at the dinner table, on the 24th and 25th.

So the markets you do find are mostly imports or side shows. Florence's is a Weihnachtsmarkt in name and, by last year's stall list, in menu: Bavarian sausage, pork shank, German cakes and mulled wine. Rome's Piazza Navona market is a Befana market, built around 6 January, when La Befana, the gift-bringing witch, hands out sweets to children. Last year Rome's firefighters helped her do it.

If you want the mug-and-sausage version, the calendar of European Christmas markets has the dates. If you want Italy, read on.

🏺 Naples and Via San Gregorio Armeno

This is the one Italian Christmas sight worth planning a trip around. Via San Gregorio Armeno is a short lane in the old centre, between Via dei Tribunali and Spaccanapoli, lined with workshops that make nativity figures all year. At Christmas it becomes a fair. The craft is handmade: terracotta heads, glass eyes, wire bodies and silk clothes, per Italian press coverage. Each year the fair also commissions statuettes of current figures: last year's honoured the musician James Senese.

What is new for 2026

  • 📍 The artisans' association (Associazione Artigianale Arte Presepiale San Gregorio Armeno) asked for an earlier start, and the city agreed: the fair opens on 1 November 2026, a Sunday. Last year it opened on 14 November
  • 🕐 No end date or daily hours have been published. An organising meeting with the city's tourism department was still to come when this was written, so check before booking

Crowds

Organisers expected about a million visitors last year, and the street is narrow. Last year the city ran a one-way pedestrian system: enter from Via San Biagio dei Librai, leave at Piazza San Gaetano. In 2024 the one-way rule applied at weekends and every day from 20 to 24 December. Nothing is announced for 2026, but assume something similar. The sensible plan is a weekday morning in November, now that the fair starts earlier. Avoid the last weekend before Christmas.

Elsewhere in Naples

Last year a life-size nativity stood in Piazza Municipio from 5 December to 8 January. The Museo Nazionale di San Martino holds the Presepe Cuciniello, an elaborate 19th-century Neapolitan crib, and is a dry option on a wet day. Opening days were not confirmed for this article, so check the museum's site.

⛪ Rome: the Vatican, the piazzas, what is open

The Jubilee ended on 6 January 2026, so the extra pilgrim traffic of 2025 is gone. Nothing about a Holy Year applies this December, so do not plan around Jubilee rules.

The Vatican

  • 🕐 Vatican Museums closed: 8 December (a Tuesday), 25 and 26 December, 1 and 6 January. On the last Sunday of the month entry is free by the museums' own rule, and 27 December is the last Sunday of December, so expect a very long queue if it applies. Confirm 27 and 31 December on the Vatican Museums site before planning around either
  • ⛪ St Peter's Basilica: free to enter, and the surrounding square holds a tree and a nativity scene every year. Last year's tree was a 25-metre spruce from Trentino-Alto Adige, and 100 Presepi, a show of nativity scenes from around the world, ran under Bernini's colonnade from 8 December to 6 January. Check that both return
  • 🕐 The pope's Christmas: the 2026 timetable is not published. Last year, Pope Leo XIV said the Christmas Eve Mass on 24 December at 22:00, not midnight, so check the time before you plan around it. On 25 December there was Mass at 10:00 and the Urbi et Orbi blessing from the central loggia at 12:00

The piazzas and the presepi

  • 📍 Piazza Navona: the Christmas and Befana market had no 2026 dates at the time of writing, and the city's own event page still showed last year: open until 6 January 2026. Its 2025 run was 1 December to 6 January. Last year's market had toys, crafts, regional food and a carousel
  • 📍 Piazza del Popolo: the fir Turismo Roma calls Rome's traditional Christmas tree, over 20 metres tall last year
  • 📍 Santa Maria Maggiore: holds Arnolfo di Cambio's 1291 nativity figures
  • 📍 Santa Maria in Ara Coeli: a long-standing Roman nativity scene with life-size figures
  • 📍 Via del Corso and the Tridente streets: last year's lights season ran from 26 November to 6 January

Tree and lights dates for 2026 have not been announced. The list above is what stood last year.

The Colosseum

The Colosseum park is closed on 25 December and 1 January. From 25 October it also runs winter hours: last entry 15:30 and closing at 16:30, instead of the summer 19:15. Book a slot for the morning. For the layout of the centre, see Rome Explained.

🏛️ Florence in December

Florence does Christmas in one square and then hands you back to the museums.

  • 📍 Santa Croce market, Piazza Santa Croce: 14 November to 20 December 2026, the official tourism page says. It opens on a Saturday and ends on a Sunday, five days before Christmas
  • 🕐 Hours: 10:00 to 22:00 Monday to Thursday, 10:00 to 23:00 Friday to Sunday
  • 💶 Entry: free. The organiser is Europa Market, and there are over fifty wooden houses of crafts, food and hot drinks
  • 📍 Last year: the market ran 15 November to 21 December 2025, and a second, smaller market, ChristmARS, ran in Piazza Santa Maria Novella from 19 December to 6 January. Nothing is confirmed for the second one in 2026
  • 📍 Lights and tree: in 2024 the tree in Piazza del Duomo was lit on 8 December. No 2026 date yet

The Uffizi is closed on Mondays, 25 December and 1 January. In 2026 that means 21 and 28 December, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. It is open on 26 December. For quieter places once the crowds thin out, Florence beyond the Duomo has a list.

🍽️ Food specific to the season

Italian Christmas food is regional, and it is fixed: fish on the 24th, meat on the 25th.

Naples

  • 🍝 Christmas Eve: spaghetti with clams, capitone (eel), baccalà with pickled peppers and insalata di rinforzo, a cauliflower salad
  • 🍲 Christmas Day: ragù, baked pasta, minestra maritata (the "married" soup of vegetables and pork), lasagne
  • 🍯 Sweets: struffoli (fried dough balls in honey), roccocò (hard spiced almond rings), mostaccioli (spiced, chocolate-covered) and susamielli (honey and sesame)

Rome

  • 🍝 Christmas Eve: shrimp, octopus and marinated eel to start, spaghetti with clams, then fish with fried cauliflower, artichokes and courgette
  • 🍲 Christmas Day: stracciatella or cappelletti in broth, capon in broth, breaded lamb chops
  • 🍰 Sweets: pangiallo and torrone. Pangiallo goes back to Roman midwinter tradition. More in What to Eat in Rome

Florence

The sweets on Tuscan tables are mostly imported from elsewhere in the region: panforte and ricciarelli from Siena, cantuccini from Prato. The regional tourist board lists no Christmas food specific to Florence itself. At the Santa Croce market you will meet German food instead.

🚪 What closes on 25 and 26 December

Italy has public holidays on 8 December (Immacolata, a Tuesday in 2026), 25 December, 26 December (Santo Stefano), 1 January and 6 January (Epiphany, a Wednesday).

  • 🕐 25 December (Friday): Uffizi, Colosseum park and Vatican Museums closed
  • 🕐 26 December (Saturday): Vatican Museums closed; the Uffizi is open
  • 🕐 1 January (Friday): Uffizi, Colosseum park and Vatican Museums closed
  • 🚇 Rome transport: last Christmas Eve, buses, trams and the metro stopped at 21:00, and on 25 December they ran only 08:30 to 13:00 and 16:30 to 21:00. The 2026 pattern is not published. Check ATAC before you plan a Christmas Day route
  • 🚇 Florence and Naples transport: holiday timetables apply. Check Autolinee Toscane and the ANM before you go, as neither had 2026 times out

Do not assume any restaurant is open on the 25th. Book Christmas Day lunch before you fly. If you are staying in Rome, Getting Around Rome covers the ticket rules.

🌦️ Weather

December averages from Wikipedia's city climate tables, which cite NOAA and Italian national data:

  • Rome (Ciampino): high 12.7°C, low 4.7°C
  • Florence (airport): high 11.4°C, low 2.6°C
  • Naples (airport): high 14.3°C, low 5.9°C

So Naples is the mildest, and Florence the coldest at night. Pack a waterproof coat and shoes that cope with wet cobbles. The what to wear at a European Christmas market guide has more, though the Italian version of that advice is a lot less severe.
